I'm applying for RD at the University of Georgia. The only thing I am concerned about are my test scores. I don't know why I test so low, especially in Math for the ACT. I've taken both the ACT and SAT several times. I've been accepted to my back up schools, Auburn and Georgia State. UGA is the reach for me, and I would love to be accepted. Do you think I have a chance?

UGA GPA: 3.82
Unweighted GPA: 3.6

I don’t think I can speak for UGA admissions, but as to why you test lower than your GPA would suggest, I wonder-
Is Japanese your native language? Some schools take this into consideration when looking at subject language tests.
If English is a second language, that could explain the test scores. You may do fine in school because the time constraints are not as limiting, and you have more visual cues in the classroom than straight reading with time constraints.
If English is your first language, the discrepancy between your performance on the Japanese test and the regular SAT is a puzzle.
Do you have trouble finishing the test on time? Is it the speed of reading?
Or is it the way you interpret the questions?
A look at the question and answer sheet might show a pattern. This may not be done in time for college admissions, but understanding what is going on may help you with these types of tests in the future.

I am half Japanese and African American, so I would consider both languages my native language. However, English would be the easier language for me. I think the problem for me is the pressure of doing well on the SAT and ACT. The more I relaxed the better scores I received. The time limit on the test with my anxiety does not mix well.
I took my Japanese subject test when I was a sophomore and I had no idea what I was doing, and just took the test which wasn’t a big deal to me at the time. It’s very frustrating to have such low standardized test scores.

Test anxiety is frustrating. Is it possible that your guidance counselor could address that in her letter? It might help with admissions for them to know that your scores don’t reflect your best ability. I’m not an admissions counselor, but I think that would be better than you explaining it.
I think UGA RD is more holistic than ED, so your essays and activities will count. You will have a teacher letter- and hopefully this letter will reflect your stregnths. Your background is very interesting too, and also being bilingual. This will stand out.
I hope others will add some advice. I hope this works out for you.

Your test scores are very low, but pennylane is right. The RD review is more holistic. The SAT/ACT is the best measure of how you go against other students. A high GPA can easily be attributed to grade inflation and differences in teachers and high schools.

Fingers crossed!

Your GPA is nice, so you have a chance in that regard. The test scores could be a little better though. We’ll be rooting for you!

Thank you so much for the support!
I just got my ACT score back and it bumped up my composite super score to a 26. I made a 25 in the math section so i’m feeling better about my scores.
I will definitely post if I get accept or rejected when I receive my decision back!

Best of luck!

Low test scores, but good luck!

I was accepted! So grateful! Thank you everyone

Congratulations!
