I am a going to be a senior and would like to apply to this school for business. My sat scores are 1160 and gpa is a 3.0 i am expecting to take the sats again and they may go up and i am hoping to improve my gpa what are my chances?

1160 on the 1600 scale? CP is getting more and more competitive, i think 3.0 is a little weak. Try to raise ur gpa =]
PS. im in a similar situation trying to get into cp but with a 1490 sat

Edit: 1490/1600 and 2160/2400 with a 3.1 unwieghted and 3.7 weighted i dont think im gonna get in though =[

To the person above:

Your SATs are actually really good. It's strange that your GPA is only 3.1 considering your SATs are so high.

I got a full ride with 1350/1600; 2040/2400 SATs and a 3.76 unweighted...plus they do consider other things like extracurriculars and your essay....so theres a lot they look at.

my score is a 1160/2400 so i dont have a chance

I wouldn't rule UM out just yet. Try retaking the SATs. And as I said, they look at other things besides just your SATs. They look for well-rounded individuals who show leadership in their communities. So any sports, community service, musical/artistic talents you may have, they want to see that. If you have some of these things, it will serve as a cushion to your low SATs.

christa, unless you have some other great academic qualities, I'd say that UMCP is a big big reach. The Honors kids this year averaged a 4.29 gpa and over 1400 on math plus CR. It's just getting very selective.

Yeah, it's a definitely reach for you. However, you can always retake the SAT and raise your GPA if the time allows.

hey walkera101: did you get in the business school with a full ride? Will you be an entering freshman? my sis is a senior now & has 1350/2020 SAT and 4.41 wgpa/3.82 gpa. She is not interested in business, but I wonder what her chances of getting into UMD and getting $$$ are (MD resident).

gettin into college park isn't that hard. It was my safety school this past year, and I easily got in.

If you have like a semi-decent gpa [3.5ish uw] and a 1180-ish/1600 sat, you'll probably make it.

Honors isn't hard either, just up the gpa and sat a couple notches...

gemstone, which is what I got, in addition to honors humanities and normal honors are a little bit more difficult, but still not that hard.

@benito: she should be fine. I had slightly better stats and I got $$, gemstone, honors, etc.

I will NOT be attending College Park ;)

@benito

No I'm not in the school of business. I'm in College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. I'm an entering freshman.

It also depends if your are out of state. UMD only takes @30% from OOS. They had @28K applicants for 4K slots. That means 1200 are coming from other states, my guess the majority are from NJ/NY. NJ has a great school system comparative to the nation, which means they pull alot from that area.

Vader the SAT isn't a few notches, they have that score out of 2400. If you have some great personal history to explain te reason you may still have the chance

@m25l
You will probably get in, I got in to CPS with a 1410/1600 and 2110/2400 and a 3.4UW, 4.0W gpa. If you have decent extracurriculars you should be fine.

M251, I am with world.

DS is going CPS also had a 1390/1600, 33 ACT and almost identical gpa (3.5/4.1) Plus we are OOS from NC. I have read that OOS NJ/NY/CT are the hardest to get in from. Even in their OOS selection they try to maintain a balance from around the nation, although most come from the Tri-State area...then again there are more applicants from that area.
If you are applying for Scholars and gemstone your essays are going to be a factor of acceptance. If you tell them you do not want to work on a group project, you will not be considered for Gemstone.

No rejected, I got rejected (i think early action if they have it but i don't remember) with a 1260 and good ECs and all

UMCP rejected the president of the Nat'l Honors Society at my son's school. She was devastated. UMCP is not a safety these days unless you're a highly competitive candidate.

I agree that for christa it is highly unlikely...however, it could still happen if there is an extraordinary background. Even if the SAT's go up they need to increase by at least 1000 pts. Sorry Christa

I feel M251 has a chance, with the SAT, but the GPA is on the low side.

Max is right, UMDCP is not a safety school anymore. Only 1 out of 7 kids got accepted, and that rate gets even worse for OOS since they accept less.

SIDE NOTE for CLASS of 13: An article just came out explaining why the acceptance rates are decreasing in the past few years. It seems kids are now averaging 10 college applications, compared to 5 only a decade ago. The schools are getting more applications, while the amount of students that they can accept has remained the same, thus they can accept a higher pool of applicants.

IN OTHER WORDS, when everyone applies to 15 schools, you have actually created the problem. It is like economics supply and demand !

Well then its kind of a vicious cycle. Cuz the less schools are accepting, the more schools people are going to apply to, in order to have a better chance of being accepted by a college.

The schools aren't accepting less...they know the number to fill, however, the more schools students apply to the larger the pool is. It is about the pool size, the bigger it is the more selective they can be!

Look at yourself...how many did you apply to as safety, reach and match?

Did you thow 100 balls in the air with the hope you would be accepted, or did you go 4 your dream...hoping you got accepted?

i got in with a 3.26 UW~~ 1260/1600 sat. So i guess you guys will get in too i suppose.

I didn't know it was possible to get that on the 2400 scale.
