Hi,
I am an applicant from South Korea.
I applied to Phillips Exeter, Phillips Andover, Deerfield, and St. Paul's.
I lived in the US for 2 and a half years. I attend a middle school at VA, and take Gifted and Talented courses for all core subjects. I got all A's in seventh grade, and had one B+ during first quarter in eighthgrade. However, my school uses a grading scale that makes an A between 94 and 100. I had a 93.3% in science, and it became a B+ rather than an A due to 0.2% difference.
Anyways,
On the SSAT, I got a total score of 2310 (99percentile). Math:800 (99percentile), Verbal:779(97 percentile), Reading:731(96 percentile).
On the TOEFL, I got a 113 out of 120, which is above 95percentile. I cannot remember the specific scores for each section, but I remember doing really well in reading(perfect score) and writing(29 out of 30).

As for my EC, I was in CTY for 2 years. I attended their summer camp last summer. I also took an online course.
I did plenty of community service (4 hours each week).
On the AMC8, I received two awards, one for scoring high and one for scoring second place at my test center. I also played soccer for 7 years and was All-Star every season I played. I also play the violin.

The interview went well, especially for Andover. My interviewer at Andover said to my parents that he was impressed and said some good things about me. He also said that Andover needs "students like him". My Exeter interviewer sent me a written letter.

To improve my chances, I did NOT apply for Financial Aid. However, I am an international student. I heard that the schools I applied to accept very few Korean students. Do you think I have a chance? And my first pick is Andover, and how much chance do you think I have for Andover?

Thank you.

UGH!! I am so SICK of posters who are like, "Do I have a chance?" EVERYONE HAS A CHANCE!!!!

Sorry, this is nothing personal, but it's been really bugging me.

Sorry. I meant to say "HOW MUCH chance do I have?".

I am sure if you call Michael Gary he will have the pleasure of assisting you and telling you HOW much of a chance you have. :)

I believe Thingslost's point was that most people have a chance and above that we really cannot judge. I guess we can say "good chance", and "bad chance" etc. but we as applicants do not have the breadth of knowledge that admissions officers have and thus we cannot give you any numerical value in terms of admissions.

That being said, I will be glad to guess. Due to the fact that you are South Korean your chances will be lot slimmer than elsewhere, many top schools are bloated with applications from these countries... All into perspective you seem to have a good chance.

Thanks, but who's Michael Gary?

You're definitely qualified!

So that would give you .. about a 20-25% chance. Since you know, those schools have acceptance rates about 20% and only a few applicants are "unqualified".

You really shouldn't be worrying. So what if you're Korean? You can't change that. You're a great applicant, but stop worrying and just check for mail around March 10th! Until then.. keep your grades up?? :)

Well they accept less than 5 koreans per year out of 200 applicants from Asia...which daunts me.

seriously?

.. is that actual information, or an unsubstantiated rumor?
& whatever. you have nothing to worry about. your application is already done and in the mail~

It's a well known fact among Korean applicants. I guess being accepted means that you're that good.

No, you have absolutely no chance. (said with sarcasm)

Very few applicants are completely unqualified. You definitely have a chance! Jeez, like we can just read the admins' mind and say "yes, he liked you, you have a 99% chance of gettin in" or "she liked you but you had a booger hanging out of your nose. this gives you a 77% chance of getting in"

You are obviously qualified, and you know the acceptance rates at these schools. abou 20% of the applicants get in. only about 5% of the applicants (max) are completely unqualified. so around 95% of the applicants HAVE A CHANCE! It's just some very minute details that setermine whether you get an acceptance letter or a rejection letter (or wait list). So you can't really chance it. I hate chancing.
