Do I have a shot at SUNY Binghamton, Albany, NP etc..?

Guys, my average is about mediocre on the college transcript right now, which is like an 84.87 average.
Im going to work my butt off from now on in senior year to raise it to an 85 after the first semester is over.

But I need to know if you guys think I stand a shot at these SUNYs or not: Albany, Binghamton, New Paltz, Oneonta, and Oswego.

GPA: 2.98
SAT I: Taking in November (1900-2000ish)
SAT II: US HISTORY -- Just took it, have not gotten the score back yet.
Essay: Very good, interesting.
Recommendation: 1 best recommendation letter since it's a SUNY, not a private school.
Extracurricular activities: Volunteered at UFT for 12 hours, Queens Library for 67 hours total, Secretary position in Good Times Center Afterschool for 100 hours, and a member of the District school Key Club.
Awards: Perfect attendence award 3x in high school.

Numbers are not as important for admission to Binghamton. Yes, we have fairly high standards but if you check out the admissions website, things are all averages. The admissions counselors who read the applications look at everything and take all things into consideration so don’t be discouraged about your grades. Make sure your essay is good because honestly that could probably make or break the decision. Also make sure that regardless of where you apply you make sure to show the admissions office what makes you different from all other people applying.

A note about your letter of recommendation bit, I think I sent in four letters of recommendation (the guidance counselor, my research teacher, my chemistry/biochemistry teacher, and my choir teacher) and I think the well rounded ness of my letters helped. I’m not saying to send in ****loads of letters, but if you have more than one teacher writing a letter… why not send a few in.

Okay, thanks guys. The support is appreciative. Anyone else?

Unless things have changed, Binghamton itself states on the Common Data Set that the three most important factors it looks at in admissions are GPA, standardized test scores and rigor of curriculum. Your GPA is below the 25th percentile and it is unclear where your SAT scores will put you. I would guess that if your high school schedule was jam packed with honors and AP courses you’ll be looked at more favorably than if you took basic Regents courses.

All that said, Binghamton will be a tough admit. So will New Paltz. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t reach, but I wouldn’t recommend your only applying to those two schools. Your chances at Albany, Oswego and Oneonta with an 85 GPA and 1300 SAT (CR&M) are much better.

Hudsonvalley, when I enroll into a SUNY, I don’t plan to stay at it for my undergraduate career. Im going to work my butt off for a year and then transfer to Boston College, which is my dream school. UA admission counselor told me that it’s possible if I call them up and ask them what courses at Albany, Oneonta, or Oswego I should take in order to be transferrable right? I would think that Oswego would be a fit for me, however, I’m limited on the possible attendence for New Paltz.

I’m taking my SAT Twice… upcoming month of November and one more time in January.

Oneonta, Oswego, Albany-yes

Bing, NP-no

three out of five ain’t bad!

The SUNYs are 95% about SAT scores, GPAs and rigor of HS record.

You may be a 50-50 shot at NP if you’re a male.

Your chances will be better if you apply ED, if it is offered. Your chances will improve considerably if you are an under represented minority and choose the least diverse campus.
