I am a junior in high school with a 3.3 GPA currently. By the end of my junior year I will have a 3.5 GPA. I only got an 1960 on my SAT. I play tennis on the team and have been on varsity sophomore year this year and i will be on next year. I play the guitar and have held a solid job since I turned 16. Do i have any chance of getting into CMU or should I look at schools that are easier to get into?

It wouldn't hurt to apply, but your stats are a little bit below average for CMU. There are other factors of course which stats don't take into account.

Everyone should have a variety of colleges to apply to including reach, safety, etc. If you want to try for CMU, then try.

It depends on want you want to do. If you want to go to CFA, really get involved in your drama class. If you want to go into computers, start a computer club or find some way to demonstrate your passions.

Also, CMU is really into demonstrated interest. Visit the school, do an interview when college apps roll around.

I figure if I would have done an interview I would have gotten in straight off, as opposed to being waitlisted.

Alright thanks a lot for the help. I am really interested in computer science as of right now so that is what I am hoping to get into. Perhaps I will start a Computer Club of some sort at my school.

Thanks Again Guys.

P.S. I appreciate the optimism.

I have to say, I think your chances of getting into the School of Computer Science are pretty slim, given your current stats. You will definitely want to be looking at some colleges that are less selective as well. Admission Statistics As you can see from the admission statistics 75% of SCS had a math score over 740 and most students were in the top 6% of their class.

Thanks MathMom,
I realize that my scores are low and that the SCS is the most competitive college that CMU has. If CMU is too far of a reach what would you suggest as a school that has a decent CS program that is less competitive?

Case Western Reserve and RPI might be worth looking into.

University of Illinois Champagne-Urbana has a great reputation for CS. I don't know how competitive it is to get into. Make sure you could really live in Cleveland and where RPI is located in NY. It is personal preference. What about your state school? SCS is extremely competitive at CMU. If your heart is set on SCS at CMU, talk to them about what you need to do to get accepted.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute is a little easier to get into than RPI. Location is similar somewhat downtrodden manufacturing town, but the neighborhood is pretty.

Rose-Hulman is another pretty good engineering school by all accounts.

UC Irvine maybe
