Dear admissions:
Sorry to bother you during your holiday break, but I have a grave question to ask.
Your supplement says: "If English is not your native language, the TOEFL or IELTS is required."
Although English is my second language, I came to the US when I was in third grade. Plus, I have my standardized test scores to prove my English abilities. If this is the case, am I required to take the TOEFL/IELTS?
Thanks and have a happy holiday!

hey a couple of us (including me) specified another language are their first language on the app for ED and…

i called them to ask (twice) and yes you are required to take the toefl if english is not your first language. they dont care if you have a 1600 combined verbal or if you’ve lived here from kindergarden, they’ll want to see the toefl score but…

its not that serious of an issue, by the time they notified me, it was too late and i didn’t take it (and i was accepted) so i think they’ll try to make a really big deal out of it but it doesn’t really play a role at all in your admissions decision if your act/sat scores can validate the fact that your ability to speak english is proficient.

English wasn’t my first language either and I wasn’t told at all by CMU to take the TOEFL. So that is kind of weird since people got notices about the TOEFL and I didn’t get a message at all.

redsox what language did you put as the language you speak at home?

I put my native language as the language primarily spoken at home, not english.

oh same here. idk i guess cmu has quite a lot of inconsistencies when it comes to admission questions lol
