I submitted my application a while ago in mid-November. I was planning on taking AP Economics in my second semester, but now I want to ask my counselor to switch me to regular...but on the common app, I had to specify my current year courses, and I put AP. So would I need to email them or something, and could this possibly affect my chances of getting admitted?

Yes, you need to contact any school that has an application, CApp or otherwise, that reflects you are taking AP Econ during second semester if you are planning to change that. Schools look at ‘course rigor’ and you need to be honest that you are not taking the AP. I can not tell you if it is going to make a difference or not. That might be a question for your GC who may be able to give you an idea of certain colleges you are applying to, but even they can not predict with 100% certainty how one component will (or won’t) alter a decision. The important step is to make sure your applications are accurate. Not being honest could cause a problem at some schools with very strict honor codes, whereas the change in course would not have mattered at all.

In addition to the good advice you got there from blueiguana, you should be aware that your GC will probably elect to provide an Optional Report through Common App to all your schools disclosing the change in your schedule. That makes it doubly important to talk this through with him or her before making the change.

Okay, thanks for the info! I’ll talk to my counselor and then contact admissions if I end up changing it.
