I was transfered from Cambodia to America in my junior year, I have take English 1 & 2 last year and 3 & 4 this year. I was told to take 4 English classes if I want go to 4 years college, but when I called the Cal State Long Beach yesterday, they said I need to take Toefl test. Howevever, when I last time called to the same Cal State Long Beach, they said if i have 4 years of english class, i'll be fine. I'm having a confusing time now, could anybody who have been in the same situation tell me if i need to take Toefl or not?

Many colleges waive the TOEFL if you have attended an English-speaking high school for x number of years, where x is a number between 2 and 4, regardless of the number of English classes you take during that time frame. I suspect that Cal State Long Beach might require 3 or 4 years of high school in the US, and that they interpreted your statement of “4 years of English” as “4 years in the US” rather than “4 English courses in 2 years.”
