Do I need to tell my high school where I am applying for college?

I haven’t started the application process yet so I simply would like to know.

When you get back all your decisions and you chose your final school you should tell your high school where you plan on attending. If you don’t tell them they won’t know where to send your final transcript which could cause some serious issues with the college you end up attending

Edit: I forgot about LoR, you will need to tell guidance counselors and teachers where you’re applying so they know where to send the letters.

Your school will need to send your official transcripts and guidance counselor recommendation letters so you will need to tell your school where you are applying.

This also depends on the application. I believe the Common Application requires a school profile to be submitted by your HS. If so, your HS might not see each college specifically but will know you are using the Common Application.

They have to know to route official transcripts. Our kid’s HS GC routed Rex letters as well (although that varies). I would hope you would be willing to tell your GC where you are applying anyway. They may end up getting calls from the school, or sometimes you might want them to contact a school. Being secretive seems counterproductive.

I agree with other comments. I don’t see how you could hide this. However, it is also helpful for the school to know where each student gets in and where they don’t get in. This gives your guidance counselor a better sense of where next year’s students should be applying.

Actually, if you haven’t started the application process yet they hopefully you are one of next year’s students.

Your school will need to submit an application package-- letters, transcripts, and so on-- to each school to which you apply.

Just curious… why don’t you want your school to know?

@bjkmom I’m not trying to hide anything from my school or do anything like that. I’m just curious.

I assume you will be applying next year. A tad late for this year.
