Do I still have a chance to get in? =/

I applied last year with TAG & IGETC to major in Applied Mathematics (once I'm in I will apply to work on a double major: Math & CSE), but I won't be done with IGETC until the end of this semester.

My accumulative GPA by the end of Fall ended up being 2.99. I was wondering if there is anyone with a similar situation as mine, and if you guys think UCSD would still consider my Spring & Summer grades. I will be done with IGETC this semester & almost done with my major pre-reqs in summer.

Family and friends tell me to stay optimistic, but I'm being realistic when I say I didn't get in. I will be working on my appeal letter just in case =[

Thanks in advance for your insight!

I’ll be honest: No. UCSD is rigid with their TAG requirements, and I mean RIGID.

Sorry, they are pretty unforgiving.

That’s what I thought… :(

Hey,

i knew a math major last year who got rejected with a 2.99; they are really strict with the 3.0 mark.

I was the same as you last year…2.9 gpa and got rejected. Took some easy classes in the summer/fall and got my GPA up to 3.19 for this application period.

I think instead of appealing you should be working on your gpa. I mean UCSD’s tag gpa is guna be a 3.5 soon…

I will tell you this:

I was rejected from UCSD last year on the premise that my GPA was a 3.19 and the admissions officer told me their cutoff (in my case) was a 3.23. When I complained this was asinine due to the circumstances they told me they rejected people over 0.01 differences so… yea. :(

They really do have the worst admissions department - watch, last year they rescinded tons of people a few months after the fact too.

similar question but reversed:I have IGETC done but missing a significant amount of pre-reqs.I’m planning to appeal to SD since my friend got in easily at SD with the same major but I have the actual 60 units done while my friend doesn’t have the 60 units just yet and neither has the pre-reqs completed. The only difference is my friend has a 3.2 GPA and i have a 2.98(Fall) but 3.07 GPA(Winter;had to mention this because if I’m correct SD asked for updates unitl March 1 and so I’m praying they look at the Winter GPA).

^ I don’t think you qualify for tag because you had to have the 3.0 by fall. I remember because that is what a counselor said at my school when I went to the tag workshop. But hey, 90% of these conselors have no clue what they are talking about. good luck!

@ray50117: Your GPA by the end of fall is the only thing that matters. Appealing with winter grades won’t do you any good. UCSD clearly stats that for TAG, you must have a 3.0 by fall and maintain that through summer.

And if you think the TAG requirements are strict, just wait until you try the appeals process. Heh.

They take everything into consideration that was posted before Feb. 1st, I believe. So winter classes (if completed by Feb. 1 and updated by Feb. 1) can be used to fulfill TAG. I spoke to an adcom at UCSD in regards to this. You can call and ask yourself if you have doubts, they were very friendly/helpful. The woman even gave me her name and e-mail, and told me to call back anytime.

Also, in regards to appeal: If you end up with a way higher GPA by the end of Spring, and have a GOOD reason for having a low fall GPA, they consider that a compelling basis for appeals. I was urged to appeal if denied (3.2 gpa, but math completed in Spring 11 = good chance of denial) but my situation is kind of complicated - I’m not sure how it’s worked out for others.

Sorry I was thinking spring. Yeah, if your CC is on the quarter system and you can input those grades before the deadline it should be OK.

well I got the math section done…pretty much I lost the TAG due to GPA because I have all the other requirements done.I am thinking of staying another year at CC so I can finish the last sequence for calculus and o-chem.the only problem I’m having is since SD now wants a 3.5 GPA for TAG Fall 2012,is the cut off GPA for non-impacted major is going to go up too(from 3.2 to 3.4)?

You guys have to remember that UCSD does not “review” applicants for admission…they simply analyze data. Unless you are appealing to prove that you meet the cutoff GPA they will not admit you.

It took me a while to wrap my head around it (went through the appeals process myself)…but I got a wake up call when the admissions rep at UCSD told me its a numbers game and NOTHING else matters.

In my opinion it is a mockery to the education system…but it is what it is.

I talked to a SD representative, and she kindly explained to me (finally someone nice in admissions) that even though I won’t be a TAG students due to my GPA, my app will still be evaluated and that they DO CONSIDER our grades from Spring and Summer semester.
She couldn’t give me the average GPA accepted for Applied Math, but that I still have a slight chance to get in depending on how I do in spring and summer grades.

As far as appealing goes, she said that from 500 appeals they got last year, only 30 were accepted. She said it’s got to be an extreme case, yet she didn’t give an example.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Doesn’t SD have to get back to everyone before April 30th? How do they consider grades from Spring and Summer semesters if they have to get back to us before the semesters have ended? Do they get back to some people later? Sorry if these questions are totally stupid!

^Valid questions, and I’d like to know them too

They are not stupid questions at all. They actually make a lot of sense. The rep didn’t answer that for me.

@dianakers: There’s no way that your spring/summer grades can be used to determine your admission decision. They “count” in that if you don’t abide by the stipulations set forth in your conditional offer of admissions, you’ll have that offer revoked. But they don’t use spring/summer grades in any capacity to determine whether or not to offer you admission in the first place. From a calendar standpoint, that doesn’t even make sense. Your spring grades won’t be in by the time all decisions have been made and you won’t even have started summer yet.

If you’re not a TAG student, I can assure you that you’ll need to have a GPA somewhere north of 3.2 in order to be accepted. UCSD sets a hard GPA floor and doesn’t do comprehensive reviews like UCLA/UCB/UCI/etc. Last year, that floor was set to a 3.2 and with the influx of transfer applicants, it’s not going down. If anything, it’s going up.
