Do people stay in the SAME apartment for 3 years? I have a lot of stuff that I like..

to keep with me all the time. well i guess not a lot but there are things that i don't always use but i want to have it in my room. so what do people usually do? also how are the channing bowditch apartments? where's the best place to live, close to campus, easy transportation?

Not everyone. A lot of people move out for the following reasons: want new roommates, want to live closer to campus, find cheaper rent, or just find a better quality apartment. It’s a pain to move, but it’s an ordeal that will take you just a few days.

Okay. Thank you.

i hated my old apartment since the rent was ridiculous, i lived with three girls who were probably the biggest slobs i had ever met (due to changing my mind to not live in the dorms again at the last minute), and we had NO reception whatsoever so the only time people could reach me was when i was on campus, which made it hard to have phone interviews, etc. the manager also pretended not to speak English or understand when i went to him with maintenance issues (but somehow his english was good when it came to collecting rent)-he wouldnt even respond when we told him we had mold by our bathroom carpet even after recarpeting the area.

i love my new apartment and im keepin it. in short, if you plan on staying summers too it really helps to stay in the same apartment so you dont have to move your stuff every 6 months which can be real pain, your landlord is decent, and you live with someone you actually like.

I’ve been in the same apartment for the last year and a half. I would re-sign for a third year if I wasn’t studying abroad next Fall. I also don’t like moving my crap around.

The best place to live is totally up to you. If you’re tight on cash, then go live farther away in Oakland or Albany and take the bus to campus. If you need to live somewhere nearby for whatever reasons, then do that. It will just cost you quite a bit more.

Thank you! Yeah, cost is not a problem, so I definitely will live near campus. The only problem with northside is the transportation. Not many buses go by except 52 and F, and that’s hard to catch unless you’re coming from shattuck area or university. Is it better to live with UC Berkeley’s housing apartments then? Since the landlord thing won’t be an issue? I don’t want to get a crazy landlord.

Eh, landlords will vary. Some are good. Some are not. Also, what someone tells you about a landlord varies. I think my landlady is great. Very responsive (called on a Friday afternoon because of a leaky toilet, and she had someone over to fix it before it got dark), on top of things, doesn’t scold us for writing our checks or filling out forms slightly off, etc. Then again, I haven’t really been put into a situation where there would be any animosity between us. I have a friend who is living in a different building that is also run by her, and this friend cannot stand her. So much that she decided to move out (had something to do with the roof leaking or something. I dunno.)

I have heard that the university’s apartments are kind of grungy, but I have yet to see this for myself. If I were you, I would just find a non-UC owned apartment. IMO, the bad landlord thing is blown out of proportion. Students who have been burned yell louder than those that haven’t.

What are you talking about, Northside is great! Not only you have 52 and F, but you also have Perimeter bus that comes quite frequently.

Hm. I didn’t know that perimeter comes there. That works.

@north side peeps: you guys remember when we used to have the 52L coming back the opposite way every 10 mins? those were the good old days before california cut AC transit’s budget. -_-

I miss the 52L. I miss 99 Ranch.

You can still get to 99 ranch by bus 25.

Yeah. There are still ways to get there. I’m just sad there’s no direct line from where I live anymore.

i miss the 52l as well. i live so far from pimentel now…

i dont recommend the apartments run by the university. their rent is above average, i’d say.

Okay. I don’t think they really have a set up I like and it’s too close to thinking that it has to do with SCHOOL. I need to get out of that mindset and move into an independent apartment.

Craigslist! and CalRentals! I got a HUGE 2-bedroom apartment for $1999 a month that is 2 miles from school. Once I get a roomie starting in the Spring my living expenses will be like $700 a month! chhheeaaapppp. ( :

The distance and lack-of-bus issues with northside can easily be solved with a bicycle. :)
