Hi, I am entering 8th grade and I am wondering if public high schools usually accept credit for classes taken out of school. I am thinking about trying to skip geometry when I would usually take it in 9th grade. I have taken geometry at Russian School of Math for two years now, and I plan to continue to take throughout high school. I want to take AP calculus and AP stats in high school, and I believe that I am/will be adequately prepared for the SAT, so geo will not be necessary.
Has anyone else had an experience similar to the one I plan to do? How did it work out? I would be willing to take online classes (Summer school is an online class at our high school, and I qualified to take cty online classes, and I would be willing to take the geo one throughout the school year). Thanks in advance for any advice/stories.
Are you saying that you already know geometry right now and you’re looking for a way to test out? You’ll probably be able to get credit, either for the outside classes themselves or by taking your school’s geometry final exam to prove you know the material.
Our school district would require you to take the credit by exam and pass with an 80%. They do not except online classes at all.
For D21 (fellow 8th grader), to get ahead one year in math, she had to take the credit by exam for 7th grade math. This allowed her to go from 6th grade honors math to Honors algebra I in 7th grade. She is now in Honors geometry in 8th grade.
At my school, they offer onlinr classes taught by school distrcit teachers and administered through a school distrcict program and those show up on our schedules and transcripts just like any other class.
You need to ask your own school about this because schools have different policies. Our school does not give any credit for outside classes. However, they usually will allow students appropriate placement. So it’s possible you might not get credit for geometry but get placed in the next class. Probably they would want you to take an exam for this to prove your knowledge. Just make sure whatever you do will satisfy graduation requirements. Also make sure that you really know the geometry.
