One of my friends' great grandmothers was Mexican so he wrote down Mexican on his Yale application. He has good stats and all but so does everyone else from our competitive school. He is rich and privileged and is as white as white can get (lols) though he wrote Mexican...do colleges realize this? Or is he just in the luckiest spot possible?

I don’t think that applying as Latino to a tip-top school really makes all that much difference if all the other information on the application indicates wealth, and opportunity. There are a huge number of very strong applicants that happen to have some Latino/a heritage. The adcoms can certainly sift through the information to find what they want.
