Do spring 2012 grades even affect UC decision as far as GPA goes?

I know spring '12 classes obviously go towards our credits, but I'm wondering if the grades even count towards the GPA they use for their decision since they send out letters by April for us transfers, which is before we are even done with the spring semester.

I received a C in Anthro 101 a while back, one of the few blemishes on my CC transcript, and I want to try crashing an Anthro 101 class during the spring along with 2 other classes. My GPA is at a 3.68, & will be 3.71 if I keep it up and get a 4.0 for the 2 classes I am enrolled in for the spring. Browsing around the web, I've found my GPA is pretty borderline, so I'm even more mad at myself for not taking care of this class sooner especially since I know I was fully capable of receiving an A in that course if I wasn't such a slacker back than.

My head hurts.

Nope. Their decisions are made based on the GPA of your semesters prior to the spring you are going to enroll in. So as much as you’d like for them to consider your spring grades, they won’t factor them in. The only thing they are looking for in springs is to complete pre-reqs, credit requirements, and to see if you don’t blow it off in the end and end up with like C’s. Then they might rescind your admission.

I’m assuming your major is anthro? If not, what are you majoring in?

And sadly enough, spring grades do not count towards their decision making to admit you for Fall 2012. They will look at it after though to see if you qualify for their “keep GPA above 3.0 blah blah” agreement.

Where are you applying?
Major?
GPA after fall?

when they say keep GPA above 3.0 blah blah, they mean your OVERALL TRANSFERABLE GPA and not just that particular semester’s GPA right?

I think both.

your spring grades can only hurt you - it will not help.
as long as you receive C’s or higher, and receive an admission letter by the end of April, you are good to go. If you receive something lower, you may be rescinded and your spot may be offered to another borderline and appealed student. That’s why it can only hurt you.

Oh okay, thanks guys. I plan on taking 1 class so I guess I just need to get a C or higher…

Thanks for all the answers guys and girls! Although I am disappointed in myself now that I know I can’t improve my chances at all…going to have all ten fingers crossed now because I really want to go to Berkeley. Does this also mean that going the extra mile, as I usually do to get get those A’s, in the upcoming spring semester courses pointless as long as I at least maintain a 3.0? I doubt it’ll stop me from putting all effort into my classes, but it would still ease my mind if I do for some reason struggle.

@Acoustickitty123 Nope, psychology…I know…that doesn’t help at all lol. My GPA after the fall semester was and currently sits at 3.68, and I applied to UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSC, UCD, UCSB, and UCI.

You’re in at all…just a bit iffy on Berkeley and UCLA. I know for a fact UCLA accepted students with an average of 3.81. I don’t know much about Berkeley…I mean, keep your options open. You have a great GPA :slight_smile:

Hope you have some amazing extra curriculars and a good personal statement. That might help a bit.

The only time I can think of when those A’s in the spring might matter is if you send a letter of appeal telling them that you improved in all these areas. But those rarely get through so don’t count on it. Just do your best. Your work ethic is what makes you successful in life. Not the school you go to.

Thanks for chancing me Acoustickitty123. Unfortunately, I have no ECs under my belt because I’ve been working part-time jobs since my high school senior year, until recently when I started to dedicate everything towards my academics. Hopefully my personal statement is as good as people have told me.

@KarmaGo I completely agree, which is why I won’t be upset for too long if I do only get to the “lower-tier” UCs. I’m actually starting to really dig UCSC.

No prob! I really think you have a great chance at UCSD and all the other mid tier schools.

As with what everyone else said, I think the semesters before spring 2012 will count towards their initial decision as to whether or not you’re admitted. Iff you’re admitted, they’ll ask for your transcript to be sent off.

spring semester is a cake, you just have to get all Bs, unless ur major requires prereqs gpa to be exactly 4.0 then that is a different story ^^.

@Ferrari4XD hi kept stalking the forum but its my first post here. do you know much detail on the major prereqs gpa 4.0 thing? which major would it be? I am an Econ major so I worried about my chance to get into ucb/ucla. I am not too confident on me getting an A for my Calculus 2, which is a major class that I will be studying in spring. Should I get 4.0 for all my major requirement for ucb/ucla? or anyone knows?
Thanks in advance.

@ferarri it’s minimum is all Cs not Bs

lol that is just my bold example.
let take UC Irvine biology field as an example, obviously if u get a C in general chemistry, that pretty disqualify you from it.
Also from what I heard, if u get a C in Econ, you pretty much won’t have a chance at UCB.

@LfcErnesTT

I’m an econ major as well. Esp. in econ major prereqs, you REALLY REALLY need to try to get as close to a 4.0 as possible to secure a spot in ucb/ucla

oh okay thanks Ferrari
I was just wondering if there are really any minimum requirement for major classes in spring for ucb/ucla , cuz I was too anxious about it. LOL
I think if we get three B or above for all the transferable class the chances for ucb/ucla are already doubtful, not to mention a C in major class…

@strive
yes you are absolutely right that’s why I asked.
I will try my best to do it. I am not a bright student on math. Fortunately I got an A for my Calculus 1. I hope my work will pay off for Calculus 2 also. Thanks for advice.
