Question: "Is deception ever justified?" See the entire thing at BB page 196.

Whether deception can be justified or if honesty prevails over lies is hard to say, but one can conclude that a plethora of either would be injurious to other individuals if not himself. There should be a balance of lies and truths in any relationship for it to remain extant. However, it has been demonstrated through works of literature and history that deceptions more often than not is an disadvantage for the fabricator. This has been shown in classic, The Jungle, written by upton sinclair.

In "the jungle", the protagonist jugris and his wife emigrated to the stockyards of chigago from Lithuania in search of the "american dream". The impression of which the stockyards were not as magnificent as they had imagined it to be, but it was endurable-or so they believed. Jugris and his family eventually found themselves bounded by the depravity of the city run by political machines. Their health deteriorated as a result of toil and adversity. One day jugris discovered that his wife had been working as a mistress for her boss. His wife plead for his understanding, telling him that she did it for their sake-but jugris would have noe of it. Ona eventually died as a result of her emotional and physical distress. By keeping the truth from jugris, she was able to bring home food-but in turn, she was outcasted by her husband, who refused to accept her "justifications", an was treated as an object of shame.

History also illustrates the ramifications of excessive truth or deception, Religion has been a part of human civilization for thousands of years, and it has been the center of controversy till this day. The clash of believers, non believers, and those who believe differently has resulted in holy wars and modern political discrepancies. This is all due to the fact that people blatantly state their convictions, while condemning those who are in dissent.

There must be a balance, and once that balance dissipates, there will be chaos and the space for justification will be long gone. if only nonbelievers feigned faith in the face of the faithful, the world would be much more peaceful.
