do they even see senior grades

i had been worried about this all 1st quarter then suddenly i got a really good report card (hooray!)
anyway i was wondering if colleges actually see 1st quarter grades cuz my school transcript gives semester grades usually and 1st semester ends after applications are sent in

nope they only check 1st semester

so since first semester isn't until after applications are due do senior grades have any part in college decision?

yes, its called the midyear report

Just because your first semester grades come out after your apps are due doesn't mean colleges don't look at them; in fact, your first semester senior grades are (I've been told) the most important of any grades you'll be sending to colleges. Remember, apps are due January 1 but decisions don't come out until around March 31; if your first semester grades come out by mid-January, your school will send your transcript with your first semester grades to your colleges, who will most definitely consider them in the admissions process.

i think most important grades are junior year but senior year 1st semester is def. important too

Hmm...what about in a trimester system? Obviously for us, first trimester grades are already done...but would our second trimester grades be a factor in admissions as well?

This is not necessarily true. Not all high schools do this and not all colleges get your first semester senior grades. My counselor didn't send my first semester senior grades to any schools, as none required them. Some schools have mandatory midyear reports and others have optional ones that you can submit if those grades are really good, but it's not a general rule that your college will get them.

If your colleges do get them, however, they will be the most important grades they see, because they are indicative of your work now as a 17- or 18-year-old rather than your work as a 14-year-old. They are more predictive of how you'll perform in college.

apps are due before january 1st? News to me...
