I am looking to transfer from my local state school to eithr Tulane, or umass Amherst, i hav a terrible hs record, this semester i will hav probly a 3.4ish with a biology major, next semester i will be changing to political science and expect a gpa of 3.7+, my question is will they look at cumulative gpa, or semester by semester?

cumulative. definately.

But...won't you be applying in like March. So, by then they'll only have your first semester grades and then like a midyear report for second semester, right?

This question is exactly what I was going to ask. I am also a freshman bio major with about a 3.3 and terrible high school grades and I am also going to switch to political science next semester and expect higher grades...anymore answers would be really helpful =)

My top choice now for transfer is Northeastern and they don't look at high school grades if you have 24+ credits(1st semester and mid term grades for 2nd semester)so I doubt they look at a cumulative GPA if we're only half way through the second semester =....lets just hope they realize that bio is a very difficult major and a GPA around 3.4 isn't easy to get.

^^^^^
Tulane's transfer application priority deadline is june first, much later than most schools, so they WILL have my entire first year set of grades.

O and btw, I think you will have a very good chance at transfering to northeastern, they have a good transfer rate.
