so... I am thinking of bringing my car, but I don't really want to because I would rather commute and save the hassle of parking/buying parking permit. Do you guys think I really need car at ucb?

Ride BART, bus, and/or bicycle. You don't really need a car in bay area.

having a car @ cal is a huge liability if anything.

Reasons:

parking tickets

your car getting broken into / stolen

getting carjacked

car getting vandalized / peed on by random hobo

eco terrorist group harassing you for owning a car

etc.

so you guys are saying that its better to not bring your car? cause i went to berkeley and parking was a b****. i couldnt imagine bringing a car over there.

im definetely not bringing my car, too much of a hassle and it will probably get jacked.. dont rly need it other than maybe going to SF for which theres BART

sweet im leaving my car at home =D

@ poppin ....lol.. eco terrorist group harrassing you for owning a car...great line...probably true though (unless it's fred flinstone's ride)

Not too far from the truth poppin. When I was just up there two weeks ago there was a group of about 20 hippies riding bikes and holding banners telling people in a hostile way to get off the oil. I would have laid tracks in front of them but I wasn't the one driving.

if you can live w/out your car than its much better to not bring it. The parking is always horrible and expensive. There is plenty of public transportation. If you live a ways from the campus, then I suggest bringing it, but if you live close to campus, leave it at home, you won't need it.

arghh, you gotta be kidding me! I just bought a brand new BMW 650CiC ;(
I don't wanna leave it at home.... what to do, what to do ?!?!

You should burn it to the ground because you spent 50k+ buying a POS car.

You should have bough a e92 m3 instead.

And really, between online contemplations of simply buying an apt close to campus and your exotic sports car, have you looked up the meaning of modesty?

egblue - u let me ride in it. that's what u should do

Adamantine, I brought my car with me only to get about $300 in tickets in a week (I was missing my front license plate - and instead of issuing me a fix-it ticket they gave me a city citation..... every three hours all day and night long!) Public transit is great here.

If you absolutely need to have a car you can always sign up for zipcar. They have some of their vehicles parked on a lot near the corner of Durant and Bowditch. (near Units 1, 2 and Channing-Bowditch Apts)

There's also CityCarShare, which is a Bay Area-based non-profit. I have memberships with both services. CityCarShare is better for short (mile) trips; Zipcar is better for longer trips (they don't charge by the mile). Both have pods all over Berkeley. Both offer a UC Berkeley sign-up discount. The cool thing about them is that one day you can drive a Mini, the next a Prius, and they also have trucks or Scion xB's for hauling stuff.

good to hear cause i dont feel like bringing my car over to berkeley. im at sf right now and driving drives me mad here

i was thinking of registering my car to my friend who lives in (a nice part of) berkeley about 20 minutes from campus. i probably wont be able to park it in her driveway (she has a really long driveway), but at least it will be in a nicer, safer part of town and ALSO i won't have to pay the exorbitant fees that cal charges. ($30/year sounds good to me).

and no i don't have a super nice car. it's a '97. and it would basically stay empty (so nothing super enticing to steal, not even a radio).

however, with all that being said, i just might do the whole 'no car' thing, for my first semester. as an upper-div transfer student, though, that would be probably a very humbling experience. ..

I'm in SF too and sold my car 2 years ago because parking in the Haight was such a pain (I no longer live there, but in an even denser part of town). The only "problem" I've had since selling my car has been the ability to go to parties in the East Bay where most of my friends live... So, move to East Bay, problem solved! ;)

don't bring a lime-green buick on 24's ....it will be gone in a couple of hours
