I know that students get paychecks for the work study salary, but do they in addition earn the award they receive if they work for a minimum number of hours each week? For instance, say that a student’s salary is $630 a week, but since he has worked for 10 hours every week, does he get $3000 that goes towards tuition in addition?
No.
The $3000 ‘award’ is the limit you can make under work study. If you work, you earn it. If you don’t work, you get nothing. Most work study pays about $10/hr, so if you are getting $630/wk, you are working 63 hours per week. That isn’t going to happen (nor can it)
In a financial aid package, a work study award means you can apply for a federal work study job on campus.
The amount listed is for the whole academic year, the maximum you can earn under the FWS program.
If it’s $3000 then if each semester has 15 weeks, total 30 weeks, then you work about 10 hours a week at $10 an hour.
