Do you have to contact the other schools that you applied to?

I applied to 9 schools and have finally chosen the school that I am going to attend. Do I really have to send in the letter to the other 8 schools that says I won't be attending there, and am therefore not accepting their offer of admission? I know that it is a courtesy, but is it a necessity? Thanks!

You don’t have to send them in, but you should. The sooner a college knows you will not be attending the faster they can act to remove someone from their waitlist.

and being polite and prompt in notifying them keeps you in good standing, which could help if you eventually turn around and apply to those places for grad school…

The faster you decline an acceptance, the faster someone from the waitlist will get in.

Ksp791, what do you consider the difference between “courtesy” and “necessity”?

Let them know you won’t be attendng the university at least.

Curious, why would you not do that? Just let them hanging, they have placed a faith (in a way?) in you. Not for you to turn that away in disdain. As it is only eight colleges I also suggest you include a small (short and sweet) handwritten letter with the college you have chosen. Maybe even a quick “why?”. Thank them.

I think an e-mail would do just fine! It is nice when schools enclose a post card for you to send back. I doubt they would take anyone off the waitlist before May 1 anyway.

Thanks for the help guys! It seems logical that you would send something back to them, but I didn’t know if people actually DID, lol.

It’s the classy and courteous thing to do. You’re paying it forward by enabling some other student to hear from that school earlier on.

You’ll find, as you get older, that being classy and courteous counts just as much if not more in the real world as what college you went to!

“Does the college really have to notify everyone who didn’t get in? Won’t they know they didn’t get in when they haven’t heard by April 1?”

It’s the same thing, except you only have to notify 8 instead of thousands. Why would you want to make more work for some poor clerk in the admissions office to try to track you down?
