Do you have to respond to a verification request if you are no longer interested in attending?

Is it somehow a black mark against you if you do not provide tax returns in response if your kid is no longer interested in attending? Will other schools that you are interested in request the same information instead?

Kid is currently evaluating his options. He is looking at a couple of CSS schools where we have already submitted to IDOC. He is looking in state and then at a couple of OOS publics. Today in response to our Fafsa amendment we got a verification request from one of the OOS publics. Kid has very little interest in this school where he has already been accepted. While it may change by May 1 it is unlikely. We are still waiting on some numbers from his first choice which is why we have not declined the school. Since he probably will not attend and he mostly has merit money from them anyway, do we need to respond to the verification request? For the record there is no reason I cannot respond to this, we have provided 1040s to other schools through IDOC but Drt does not work for us so it would mean printing, signing, scanning and then uploading the return and 2 other verification forms they requested. Not sure why I should bother for a school he does not want to go to

If he remains interested in the place, you have to send the documents. If he can tell you now that he is absolutely certain that he’s no longer interested, and plans to choose from the other options, then you don’t need to send anything. He, however, would need to send the “Thanks, but I’m not accepting your kind offer of admission.” note.
