Do you need a Hold?

Hi,

I auditioned for CCM at the unifieds Feb. 6, and have not heard anything yet. I’ve noticed many people have gotten emails letting them know they are on a “hold” and will hear back soon. Is the “hold” a required step on getting accepted? I haven’t gotten such an email and would like to know if that’s pretty much a “no,” if only to brace myself.

Thanks.

I auditioned Feb 6th at NYC Unifieds too!
I called them and apparently no one from NY Unifieds has been discussed at a committee meeting yet because it was postponed to this coming Tuesday.
A “hold” pretty much means deferred.
The girl on the phone said we should hear something by the end of next week!

thanks! Did you have the Legally Blonde routine? That may have been the deciding factor for me on where I wanted to go. :)

Hahaha, yes!
It was a fun routine :D

Hey guys, I could be wrong, but I have friends who attended NYC unifieds, Chicago Unifieds, and LA Unifieds and friends that have been put on “hold” from those… I don’t think they decide if you are on hold in a faculty/committee meeting… they decide in the room, from what I understand… and then you get an email saying you are under serious consideration… then other faculty members will have a committee meeting and watch the on hold auditions from the recordings… check your my status and email…I heard there will be 2 different reviews… talent review one week and then academic review next week before we will hear… I could be wrong though…

@mtdude- My “status” doesn’t say anything except they recieved my application…

MTdude - I think you’re right. However, as Mr. Berg said at auditions (as well as the language of the email), it sounds as though they send their “hold” list to university admissions. Then, the university does an academic review of each of the candidates. After this review, applicants are discussed and reviewed once more by CCM faculty.

This may not be exactly right but from my hold email and my audition, thats what the process sounds like.

We should all probably hear this coming week as final auditions took place this past Saturday.

cjm93MT–Did you audition at NYC Unifieds?

Yup! Feb 3rd!

hmmmm.
I wonder if that is true that you must recieve an “on hold” email if you are still in consideration.
I called at the end of last week and the lady on the phone said I would be discussed at the next committee meeting since it was cancelled last week.

I just finished speaking to a student who attends ccm and he said that he did NOT receive an on hold email before he was accepted and that is does not mean you are no longer being considered.

I think as long as you did not receive a rejection e-mail you are probably still being considered…right?

well, let’s hope so! :)

I don’t know whether or not people who are NOT on “hold” are being considered. But in my opinion, why would only SOME of the people they were considering receive emails saying they were under ‘serious consideration’?

I know some people were placed in a “no action” group from earlier auditions and then later got a “hold” email…

Again, I have no idea! Is this “hold” thing new? Little seems to be known about it.

Has anyone that auditioned at Chicago Unifieds personally received a holds/serious consideration email to date?

According to someone who attends CCM, they said that only a handful of the accepted students got “on hold” emails.
So the fact is, just because you did not receive an email does not mean you are rejected.
All in all, I have no clue as to what is up with the “on hold” emails.
If anyone finds out, let me know! haah

Maybe “hold” people are CCMs second choice. Maybe CCM does not want to offer them an acceptance or cannot yet because there are other people they gave a spot to first. After these preferred people decide not to got to CCM, freeing up a spot, then maybe CCM will offer these “hold” people that opened up spot. If CCM really wanted them, wouldn’t they have gone ahead and accepted them. Think about it. If I were a "hold’ and not an accept I would probably go somewhere else where I was really wanted right off the bat. I would not want to be someone’s second choice. Who wants a boyfriend who only picked you because he was dumped by his first girlfriend. Right?

I get your reasoning - but being “on hold” doesn’t really mean you are second choice at CCM - it is not like a waitlist - it means you are still in consideration for acceptance but they just have not decided yet - and want to see more kids before they do decide. They have only accepted a few students so far at CCM - I guess those two or three students could be considered CCM’s “first choice” since they were quickly accepted. There are a lot of schools that do not make decisions until the end of their auditions and the students are “deferred” or in a “pool” of those in consideration - or whatever the terminology the school uses. It is not that unusual for schools to wait until after the Unified auditions to send out notifications - and for those who auditioned early to be “on hold” or deferred for awhile.

But I thought LA Unifieds were CCMs last auditions. Why send a “hold” a day or two after seeing a student in LA? Are you suggesting maybe they held a few they saw in LA that were CCMs FIRST CHOICE pending some other kind of review?

GumpMT, you have misunderstood the “hold” process at CCM and MTMama tried to explain it. It is NOT a wait list and it is not a “second choice” list whatsoever.

Some schools like NYU, Emerson, Carnegie Mellon, Boston Conservatory, and Syracuse wait until the entire audition season is over before notifying ANYONE of ANY admissions outcome. They notify everyone at once (though Syracuse is in a few waves shortly apart) in mid to late March whether accepted, denied, or wait listed.

CCM, however, (and a few other schools such as Otterbein or Texas State, for example), notify on a rolling basis of rejections and then let those who are still in consideration know that they are on hold until the final admissions decisions will be made. What these schools are doing is telling upfront as they go along about rejections and as they narrow the pile of those under consideration. The first group of schools I mentioned also narrow that pile but just don’t tell people they are denied admission as they go along and just tell everything at one time at the end of the process. CCM does accept a small few as they go along but would be disadvantageous to them to fill much of the class until all auditions are completed. But they do weed out those denied admission and inform them as they go and hold onto a pile still under consideration. Every college is narrowing their pile and it is just that CCM and some others, tell you as they do so. Those on “hold” are fully in consideration and not second choice at all. This is NOT the same as a waitlist in April after acceptances go out and if they don’t fill the class. Totally different. Deferrals (or “holds”) are not wait lists.
