I'm looking to transfer to Georgetown as an Econ major. Most of the information I found online is a little outdated, so I wanted to found out a little more. I'm going into my sophomore year. I had to transfer out of my first school after the first semester of freshman year due to family issues. I still made a 3.71. At my state's flagship university second semester, I earned a 3.786 in the business school. I am also in the honors college. As far as EC's go, I am a member of a fraternity, the finance society, and volunteered with an Autism Speaks event that raised over $50k. I also started my own landscaping business and worked full time at the world headquarters of a major company. I guess my question is how difficult is it to transfer into the Georgetown as an Econ major? Does it look like I have a solid shot? Anything else you'd recommend me doing in the next semester before I apply to increase my chances? Thanks a lot in advance!

To piggyback off of this thread, I am also in a similar situation. I am looking to transfer to GU with a GPA of 3.8 and as far as extra-curricular activities go, I was a liaison for the undergraduate student government during the fall semester 2013 and was just recently sworn in as a student senator for the next two semesters 2014-2015. In addition I just got an interview for a fellowship to work for an incumbent U.S. Senator. However, in retrospect my grades and SAT scores in high school were otherwise pretty bad. My final GPA was a 3.3 and I believe my highest SAT score was a 1650(?)/2400. Factoring in these things, how good are my chances of being considered? I’m going into my sophomore year in college at UMass Boston and hoping to transfer as a junior. I’ve had my eyes set on GU ever since high school and I think it would be a great school for the ambitious career path that I’m taking but I’m doubtful on whether I would even be able to afford the cost of living in DC let alone getting accepted into the school. Like Ghintery23 said, most of the discussions on transfer acceptance to GU is outdated or irrelevant so I would really appreciate if our questions were addressed. Thanks!

Test

My son has a 34/36 on the ACTs, 780 Subject SAT Bio, 760 Subject SAT Chem. His GPA is 3.0. He goes to a top private school in Manhattan/NYC. I add this fact, because, I was told that the weighted GPA can be higher as a result. He has taken tough courses (e.g. Advanced Physics, Adv Math, Adv Computer Sci). Was told that schools would look at these favorably. Not sure though.

Question: Does he has a shot at Georgetown?

What a bright boy with great test scores! His GPA is low for Georgetown and doesn’t really match up with his scores - maybe he can address this in his application if the courses are very hard at his private school. The students from my daughter’s prep school admitted to Georgetown had many AP classes and weighted GPA’s above 4.0 - my daughter was a 3.95 unweighted, and 4.6 weighted with similar test scores to your son. Also, I’ve heard that standards for boys are different than for girls and her year, 6 girls went to Georgetown from her class, one boy was admitted but he chose Cal. It is possible that the gpa admission threshold for Georgetown is lower for a boy but this is just speculation - it seems that Georgetown would want to accept more boys to even out the numbers to 50/50 boys/girls. Good luck to your son.

Avarose, Thank you so much for your kind reply. Yes, he is from a very strong private school in NYC. However, I think his chances are low at Georgetown. I think we will make this his stretch school and have him apply to American University in DC. It comes down to his GPA. He has taken very tough courses …maybe not such a bright idea in retrospect :-)…But, he will have the same challenges at other places! I appreciate the feedback. I will post a similar comment on the AU board and see what comes out of it. Thank you again!

So does anyone have any insight on how I look as a transfer candidate?

Would really appreciate any suggestions. To update my profile, I am taking 19 credits this semester and will most likely make a 4.0, improving my GPA to a 3.91.
