Do You Want Your Children to Come Home After College?

We live in suburban DC and although both of our kids were born and raised here, the area does not do much for either of them. D’s career plans would likely take her to a city. Don’t know about S yet.

H and I are about 800 miles from our own families in the midwest. We would love to be closer geographically, but when we were starting out there were no jobs in that area. We tried to relocate to the Chicago area several years ago but it didn’t happen. I frequently say that when our kids settle down, H & I can move closer to where they are. Unlike our parents, we have no strong lifelong ties to the area where we live now.

Our son left to go to college on the other side of the country in 2003, and except for one summer vacation while he was in college, and visits a couple of times a year he has been out of the house. It bothers my wife more than me, but my philosophy has always been that as a parent you raise them and then you let them go.
