Does Alabama recalculate HS GPA?

I’m curious to know because I’m shooting for the University Fellows Experience (which I know is extremely selective), and I know the minimum GPA for that is 3.8. I have around a 3.6 so far in the toughest courses, and my school doesn’t weight grades.

Thanks all.

No they don’t sorry

Our hs runs on a 5.0 scale and my sons current GPA is 4.8. Will UA just do the math and convert this to a 4.0 scale?

^^^^No. We were told by an Admissions counselor that UA uses whatever GPA your high school turns in on the transcript for both admissions & scholarships.

I believe someone posted before that they asked their HS counselor to attach a letter to the transcript converting their grade to a weighted one. It can’t hurt to try.

Yeah, my friends go to a 5.0 Honors weighted H.S. and if you take only honors classes you could end up with a 5.0. That is impossible at my school, lol because even if you take all honors you have to take religion and our honors scale is 4.5. AP is 5.0 for an A, but thats AP.

Oh well, I don’t really need the boost for admission. But they would take things like this into consideration for the Fellows, right?

you want your school to send a converted weighted 4.0 GPA when they send your transcript.

my daughters high school uses a 6.0 scale (my DD is 6.25) and they did recalculate and with their recalculation she ended up with a 3.3. so DO have the high school recalculate and send an explanation along with your transcript.

It seems odd that if your daughter is above the highest possible GPA that her weighted GPA on a 4.0 scale would only be 3.3. How did you calculate that? I would think you would divide 6.25 by 6.0 and multiply that by 4.0. That would make her GPA 4.17. This is the way an admissions counselor talked me through it today. I told her my son’s GPA on a 5.0 scale was 4.778. She told me to mathematically convert that to a 4.0 in the way I described above. It made his GPA on their scale a 3.82.

i agree with tat62, being lower than a 4 makes no sense if she is higher than a 6. i work it out to be 4.16 using tat’s method

Mike, so even though your school transcript had her weighted GPA, they looked at the individual grades and calculates the lower GPA?

I wonder if all state schools will do that, which will put us out of the running for a lot of state school scholarships.

Although son’s unweighted GPA is not that low, it may not qualify him for certain scholarships or admission to LEP programs, even though he has the qualifying SAT and ACT scores.

I will call on this, but it looks like we may have to send an explanation or an addendum to his admissions file.

Thanks for the heads up on this.

yes, i recalculated it the same way as you all did. BUT … i asked UA about it and they came up with 3.3 because they differentiate between plus and minus grades.

so that is how they got their number!

it is ok, i am sure i will be able to get the school to fix it. at least i THINK i will!

I was told on the phone by a UAH admissions counselor that they just look at the GPA on the transcript and turn it into a GPA on a 4.0 scale (if it isn’t already). I told her it didn’t include PE grades but did include weighted grades for AP and Honors. She said it didn’t matter…they just use the GPA they see on the transcript.

well, that may be for UAH, but the info i am telling you is from correspondence with UA today. so it is what they did in our particular case.

i thought they were going to just take the GPA as submitted, but that is not what happened.

: /

mike i’m with everyone else, ua and uab told me, they do not recalculate, they accept what is in the transcript. can you get her hs to calculate a weighted, more in line with the above calculation and submit that. maybe ua felt they had to do something when they saw the 6.0 scale as it is so far out of the 4.0 scale??? but if they saw a 4.16 they would have no need to do anything with it and would just accept it.

yes, i know!!! i totally did not expect this to be a problem with UA. i knew that auburn was going to have an issue with the 6.0 scale, but i thought UA was just going to take whatever the high school sent. grr.

one thing to check on …

make sure you know what your schools system is. i thought ours was considered to be a 7 point scale, because the highest you can get is a 7. an A in an AP class = 7 points. but actually it is a 6.0 scale. so, some of you might want to check on that to be sure. if your kid is making half As and half Bs in upper level classes his/her GPA should probably be above regular A level. as in 4.2/4.0.

so, you with the 5 point scale, are you sure it is a 5 point scale or is it a weighted 4.0 scale. it makes quite a difference.

wonder if it lists the scale on the transcript?

Gosh! And I though my D’s HS used a screwy system.

They take the numerical grade earned (60-100) and multiply that by either 1.0 = normal, 1.05 = college prep, 1.1 = honors, 1.15 = AP. Total up those scores and divide by classes to arrive back at a numerical score. (Example: 86 in AP = 98.9, 93 in Honors = 102.3, 90 in CP = 94.5 >>>>> total = 295.7 divide by 3 = 98.57 ) So Bama would see 98.6.

I think they send a conversion table but don’t show an actual converted letter garde. I wonder how A will view it? I guess we’ll see in a week or so when the scholarship paperwork is due to arrive.

So UAB does not recalculate? My son has about around a 4.2, weighted, no idea what it is unweighted, and hoping they’ll take the 4.2 for scholarship purposes or admission to selective programs.

montegut, when son and i visited i specifically asked and they said they do not recalculate ie adding weight for honors etc, but after reading Mike’s posts i wonder if that means only if it appears to be in the 4.0 scale. they said they take what is on the transcript, my son’s school although all honors and ap classes does not usually weight so gc is supplying a weighted as the higher the better for the programs he wants.

ok, i have emails in to the high school someone else at UA and someone in the honors college.

ha! hopefully i can get this sorted out by tomorrow. this is hard work!!!

: )

yeah, it seems the magic words are GPA weighted on a 4point scale!

those of you who have come up with the calculation … did an admission person tell you that, and if so, at what school.

i emialed that to the recruiter i have been working with and she said she was impressed!!! haha … not rocket science, just a simple little calculation.

so, i repeat … when you send your transcript, have them send a modified transcript showing the GPA on a 4.0 WEIGHTED scale!!!

save yourselves some trouble!!!
