Does an MBA concentration or undergrad major matter more for jobs?

Hey guys, I was wondering if an MBA can get you into a certain field if your undergrad major wasn't in that specific field. For instance, say you want to be an investment banker, but you majored in general management or marketing. If you then got an MBA and did your concentration in finance, would you then be a candidate for an I-banking position? I ask this because I am a senior in college, but it's kind of late for me to change majors, and I am not quite sure which field I want to work in. I'm thinking I either want to do banking, consulting, or sales. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

bulldog, that is what graduate business school is all about.

I was a ChE undergrad and finance/accounting MBA and ended up in Investment Banking

johnadams,

when you applied to mba programs, did you specifically say that you want the MBA to change career paths? Were you essays around this career switch?

Your work experience is probably the most important determining factor if you went to a top MBA school. For example, it’s much easier to go into healthcare, if you have healthcare background. Also, if you want to go into Private Equity (PE), PE or at least major IB experience is pretty much required. However, the are other career option that doesn’t require previous experience, investment banking is among one of them.

Most MBA schools’ application essays will ask you what you want to do with your degree (your goals) and how that particular school can help you achieve your goals.

theimage, it has been a long time, but I believe that in the application for business school I discussed how I would use the combination of ChE and MBA to work in, say, the Chemical or Energy industry.

My first job out of business school was, in fact, at a major International Energy Company.

Oddly enough, in those days we didn’t know much about Investment Banking until we got to business school, so I didn’t discuss anything about Investment Banking in the application. However I did discuss a desire to start-up or be with a firm that buys up and/or invests in companies, which is now known as a Private Equity firm.

I really want to concentrate in finance/accounting or management when I go for my MBA. I’m just unsure if I will be able to find a job at a respected finance/consulting firm with a marketing degree instead of having a finance or econ major. I’m thinking it will be hard to land a job with this route, especially in these hard economic times.
