My son will be transferring from Santa Monica Community College. He is looking at reach schools and safety schools (of course). Does anyone have any experience with being a transfer student from a community college to a 4 year school?
I’ll bet that community college has a transfer advisor who has experience with students from that CC and transfers to four year colleges.
Your son should make an appointment with the transfer advisor ASAP.
@Gumbymom likely can give you info about transferring to CA public universities.
Also Reach/Match and Safety schools will depend upon his Transfer GPA, Major and which courses he has completed and plans to take.
SMC has academic advisors to help aid in the Transfer process.
Is he targeting UC’s, Cal States, Private Universities in California or also out of state schools?
If he is looking at UCs (since SMC is in California), then the UC transfers subforum may be more specific.
Also, see https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/about-us/information-center/transfers-major for admissions and https://www.assist.org for course equivalencies.
It may help others help you if you mention his college GPA, intended major, and course work completed.
Out of state, in NY or PA. I was wondering about the chances of getting into schools from a community college. I will suggest he talk to the advisor at SMC. Thanks!
He’s a B student. Not sure what his GPA will be since he just started.
If he plans to transfer after only one year of community college, his school record from before CC will likely be used. This is because…when applications need to be sent, he won’t have a full year I’d CC courses to even send to the colleges.
You need to check to see which of these colleges will require the SAT or ACT as well.
I would suggest looking at the Colleges That Change Lives group. There might be a school in that group that will be attainable.
