There are so many crazy accomplished people, and I'm not saying they're not all legit, but someone who's always honest thinks everyone else is honest like themselves =) (kidding) I'm gonna assume most everybody is telling the truth, but I just thought I'd ask.

lying on a message board is a pretty pathetic way to get an ego-boost. besides, even if you do lie, how would that help you?

No one lies on CC.

i have a 4.0 uw gpa and a 2400 on the SAT... I got rejected from UCLA and JHU.. Whats stopping someone from doing this?

I'm sure some people lie, those as said before it would be quite pitiful if someone were to do it for an ego boost which really doesn't help you situation, but hmmmm, yeah people lie.

Ya, I lied on CC. I said I was cool when I wasn't. I also said that I got a 2450 on my SAT and a 6 on my AP tests..

some people might, it's the internet.

Well, yeah, I've caught several lying. (I can tell they are caught because they disappear.)

One particular example was someone who claimed a number of incredible stats including winning a particular competition. He made the mistake of saying he won it in December 2005. I looked it up and found that the entry deadline wasn't even until January 2006, with the winner announced later than that. This is one guy who promptly disappeared ...

Someone else said that many colleges have a page attached to their applications where you report how much money you are willing to give the college, and even included specific college names. People who had applied to these very colleges called him on this and again, the disappearing act.

Every so often there are people who pretend to be African American and post mediocre stats, apparently to get people to say they can get into top schools (some sort of protest against AA, I guess). Often these posts don't ring true -- then there are these snipe fests back and forth about whether someone is a troll or not.

I certainly wouldn't assume that everyone here tells the truth. How many threads are there where people say that everyone cheats, everyone lies on their college applications, etc.? No, everyone doesn't, but it is an indication that this person does. Sometimes the people even admit it and say that anyone who doesn't is a fool.

As far as lying about incredible stats, I don't know offhand what someone would get from that, unless s/he is trying to make some other point. For instance, I have these numbers, someone else from my school has these mediocre ones, but they got in and I didn't -- it must have been (insert peeve here -- URM, legacy, development, etc. status).

I would believe there may be a lot of 'white' lies posted around here. Maybe one or two points of an ACT score higher ect. Just changing a wording on what they have done so no negative attention will be drawn by their peers for assessment.

I find it impossible to lay on the internet.

Don't take that the wrong way!

just some... and those are the ones you need not fear because they are obvious.

What is more important is to vet the credibility, integrity and informed opinion of the poster whose advice/suggestions you are considering. There is no doubt that a lot of good information is disseminated here on CC, and therein lies the value of CC. Equally, there is no doubt that a lot of DISinformation is shared as well. Often, the intent of the poster may be altruistic, but the information being shared could well be only partially true, out of context, out of date, or just plain inaccurate.

For prospective college students, there are few decisions that many of you will think to be more important than the choice of the college you will attend. Just as with a major medical procedure, do the research thoroughly. Get opinions, but also get second opinions. Get the answers to your questions direct from the source if you can't easily find it otherwise, i.e., contact the Admissions Dept. to the college -- most will be happy to assist you. If you ask a question here, and everybody responds similarly, there's probably some validity there. On the other hand, if you get mixed messages, perhaps there's a good reason for you to then get more definitive advice if that is important to you.

I think a few people exagerrate, but I don't get why. CC is all about helping each other, and how can you help someone if they give you the wrong data?

One reason people might lie on here is because some people probably feel very inferior after reading endless posts of people scoring 2300+ on SATs, 5's on 10+ AP tests, incredible EC's, etc. It really is overwhelming when someone who is smart within their own school/environment to comes on here and realizes they're near the bottom as far as stats go the bottom on this website.

Also, CCers tend to give rather harsh replies to mediocre stats, telling people they have no shot and such. Many aren't exactly kind or considerate about it.

Personally I haven't lied because I've never even posted stats on here, but I can certainly see why people may slightly embellish the truth to avoid ridicule and embarrassment.

Yes...they do.

I don't see the point of lying about stats, especially if you come for honest information and advice. You won't get far telling everyone you scored a 2400 on the SATs, cured cancer, and beat every track record at your school (in the same day).

I mean, sometimes I'm sort of shocked by peoples' ECs. My ECs wouldn't be super impressive to many, but I'm satisfied with the way I've spent my time throughout high school, and that's all that matters to me.

yea, true, it's especially pointless to lie in the what are my chances thread b/c you're not helping yourself in any way so why even bother.

I never lie on College Confidential. Here are my stats:
ACT: 36*
SAT: 2400*
Class Rank: 1/841*

*Not true
