A (usually mature) friend of mine and I were talking about CC when I brought up the (so far) skewed results of the ED/EA results poll (~62% accepted?!?) when my friend says, "Well, I'll bet you people are going to lie about it."
"But what for? It's anonymous, so it isn't like they're going to be embarrassed if they vote 'rejected' or 'deferred.'" I say.
My friend goes on to explain that if he got rejected, he might vote as many times as possible "accepted" just to annoy people.
I was so surprised - maybe I'm naieve, but why would someone bother?

So my question is: How much lying do you think goes on on CC? And for what reasons?

I think it's mostly people's ego's regarding stats and such. How could you possibly not have a 4.0 GPA, 2400 SAT, tons of EC's, awesome essays and amazing recs? You're so inferior! Rejected!

You lose the idea of a "resource" once you start lying about things, I see your point. Because people giving you help based on these bloated stats is somewhat useless.

And a possible explanation for the high acceptance rates for ED/EA is that those who were denied don't have as much of a motivation to vote in the polls, whereas those who are accepted love to show off their accomplishment.

I don't think very many people lie on CC, about their stats at least. Usually the people here are the students who're motivated enough to get into the top colleges (the common saying is CC is the Cream of the Crop). Then again, if you're rejected, you won't exactly brag about it. :p

I think people lie and post perfect stats and stuff to kinda scare competition away so less people apply to certain schools and its easier for them to get in. Granted, it that was the case and it did work, it would probably only work for a small percent of people...but think about it...if ur in a pool of people with reaching stats, u'd want to scare off as many people as you can.

I really don't think there's much of this. Once every month or two you get someone claiming that they got 2400s 3 different times, are a football allstater, are a valedictorian inuit bagpiping champion, etc, but those are pretty obvious. What's happening in the decision threads is just selection bias - people that don't get in aren't likely to post.

I don't believe the skewed results on that poll are due to lies. How many students who got rejected ED are going to post on here, or even visit College Confidential for a while.

RodLo: "Well I got deferred from UGA..."

If you got rejected, would you still post and vote on those polls?

Yep, I would. It's not like I'm embarassed by it...or would be. I know I'm not dumb, and it wasn't an easy school to get into...so really, I'm not ashamed. Yeah, it sucks...but not worth crying in a corner over. I'm not the only person on here who got deferred/rejected, so who cares? I considered it my reach school...so saying I'm not in yet (or won't ever be in) really isn't that difficult for me.

A few days ago I was looking at the stanford RD decision thread, and the average GPA of people accepted, was the same as the average GPA of people rejected. Maybe admissions is that random but it seems like the average stats of people rejected shouldnt be the same as people accepted

i dont think anyone lies unless they are an idiot. on an anonymous forum where no one cares, and if you give false stats you get bad results. if you lie, you get bad advice, and all that sets you up for is disapointment. also i think no one posts if they get rejected. people here have the false notion that the worse that you can do is get defered. people feel stupid if they get rejected outright. people like knowing they coulda gotten in, but they were just unlucky. i recommend posting even if you get rejected because it helps us. of course people dont want to do that. look you are an idiot if you lie on a forum where no one cares about your stats, we are all here just to help you. also, if you post (made up) perfect stats and say you got rejected just to discourage us, then you are a jerk. (i have some other choice words for people like that. but i will retain my dignity and not say them here)
