So, i'm awful in math and wondering about my senior schedule. I've taken algebra, geometry, and trig. I don't want anything to do with pre-calc so would prefer to take AP stats.

When a college says they are looking for 4 years of math will they consider AP stats as meeting that requirement? I plan on majoring in english if that matters. I know if I put down bio or math for major I could see where this would be a problem but hoping as an english major it won't kill me.

All my english/history/language have been at the AP level and have a 3.7 UW

Yes, AP stats is a math class. Don’t count on it being easy though. It is easiER than the other AP math classes, but, depending on the teacher, it is by no means an easy class. I know my school has numerous regular math classes that fulfill the 4 year prerequisites and aren’t AP or honors. Check with your school as well if you are scared about math.

For college, stats is generally looked at as an elective.

(so I’ve heard.)

Everywhere I’ve heard says that it’s a math class, but I wouldn’t be so sure now. Check with the schools to which you are applying, only they can know for sure. It’s obvious if there’s already contrasting answers in the first 2 replies that we won’t be able to bring forth a solid answer lol.

I agree with dyno: AP Statistics is math.

You’re right: if you want to be an engineer or a physicist or an astronomer, it would probably be a mistake to take Statistics instead of AP Calculus. But you want to major in English. If you’re up to it, it’s a perfectly fine choice. But there may indeed be easier things offered in your school that would count as your fourth year of math.

most colleges do not see stats as an elective. It counts as high school math in the UC’s.Seeing as you are not interested in anything to do with pre-calc, you are probably not interested in any college that does not count it as meeting the math requirement for admission.

As an AP Stat teacher I should warn you that I have never had a student who took AP Stat INSTEAD of pre-calc ever pass the class. My students usually take the class concurrently with honors pre-clac. The seniors who opt for AP Stat instead of Calc AB usually are never able to get beyond a B- because they think it will be “easy”.

If you really have had enough after algebra II you should seriously consider something else.

Does your school offer a non-AP Stats class or Consumer Math? Those might make a lot more sense for you, and provided they meet your school’s graduation requirements you will be fine.
