Does being a blood donor count as an EC?

Crap, ok. I am so screwed then. Unless this counts as an EC, i will have no other ECs AT ALL! What do I do!! Is my future totally ruined?? I am so scared right now.

Community service is an EC..... Giving blood is both.

not necessarily^^
remember what the root word of extra-curricular is yes, "Curricular". When I think of curricular I think of academics. && giving blood doesn't fall under that umbrella

fhgwgads2005
wow..........I seriously feel bad for you because elite schools are really picky when it comes to finding well-rounded students && lacking extra-curriculars or service credits is a minus; not trying to intimidate you though. Go find something to do this summer. See if theres a program you can register for. Just don't do it for the sake of adding extra ink to your Resume list or do something you don't enjoy.

"remember what the root word of extra-curricular is yes, "Curricular". When I think of curricular I think of academics."

Umm... "extra" means "outside"...... Put 2 and 2 together...

"outside" curricular kk.....so that will be something like pre-college or summer courses, or an internship that sorta teaches you. Not giving blood!

&& extra doesn't necessarily have to be outside, it can be within your school

Right... but it's outside the realm of required curriculum. As such, it can be whatever you want it to be as long as you can justify how it has helped you grow as a person. Including giving blood!

Are you serious? This is your only "EC"? What did you do the first 2 or 2.5 years of high school outside of the classroom??? Giving up a couple hours a day every two months and in the meantime doing nothing else will not look good to the admissions folks.

Let's say you turned 17 the summer before your junior year, so one year ago. That means you've donated blood 6 times so far. Maybe, maybe, you'll have 8 or 9 donations by the time you submit apps. Say this requires you to give up 5 hours each time (which is a stretch, since the donation process takes about 1 to 1.5 hours including the interview and post-donation waiting time). 9 * 5 = 45 hours over approx 15-18 months.

If this is seriously the only EC or Community Service you've done in four years, you'd better have amazing grades, essays, recs, etc to get into the top colleges.

It's a community service. It can be treated as such on your application.

If this is all you've got for "ECs", then I hope you're aiming for state schools or numbers-heavy schools. I don't think you would stand much of a chance at "top schools".

well... it's your application. if you don't particularly want an acceptance letter go ahead.

Giving blood would make an interesting essay topic since you're so involved in it and all, but do you have no other ECs that you can place above "giving blood"?

"IMO, if you're looking to giving blood to give yourself a boost on your app, theres a problem"

What about any community service??? We shouldn't kid ourselves into believing that everyone does everything for purely selfless reasons...

kk, you're so cynical, i love it

LMAO* @ the though of even THINKING donating blood is an EC.

You must really have done nothing in HS huh man?

wow...i just have nothing to say except that this post amazes me

I sometimes give some small change to beggars so they can buy some beer..does that count? I mean, I must've saved 100 people from not drinking..gotta mean something to colleges

LOLOLOL...it does sound kind of hopeless && funny
OP, for you to only have giving blood as service credit or EC. yuor school must have not had any extra-curriculars you can.
If I were you I would explain that to the admissions commitee

negru>LMAOOO.....wwoooww....

It is kind of hard to do ECs, because my school pretty much only has athletics, which is impossible for me since I pretty much only have one leg. I am just really uncertain about my future right now, because I can't say much about myself besides a strong interest in academics.

fhqwgads2005: 90% of colleges in the USA would welcome a person who is striving hard for a good academic environment. College Confidential centers around discussion about the top tier schools and the aspects of admission into those very select ones. Trust me, even if you don't end up at a "name" school, life isn't over for you.

put it down if you want to be rejected. That's just about as desperate as I can say. That's like saying watching TV or cutting your lawn is an EC. It's just something you do.

Don't listen to 1MX, hes trying hard to intimidate you.
Donating blood is not the same as cutting your lawn. It is counted as community service because your doing it for someone else's benefit. Whereas cutting your lawn is for your own. Quit exxagerating!

fhqwgads2005 >Tell the admissions commitee that your school didn't offer that many ECs but Don't tell it in a wining or complaining way.

I also hope you know that the essay portion of college applications gives you different topics, so dig deep within yourself && tell them somehing Unique. Tell them something that makes you different. The essay doesn't necessarily have to be based on academics or EC etc. It can be a disease that you overcame, a disability, an inspriing walk with your grandfather or just a teacher that inspired you

get what I mean?
