Sorry I couldn't find a perfect forum to discuss this. But does donating blood count as community service?

It’s up to the school. At my daughters’ school, it did. I can’t remember how many hours they got (5? 10?) but they did get credit for it.

I guess I haven’t seen it put on a college app, if that is what you are asking.

I was going to put it in the college app. I am applying for a atate school by the way. I looked up if donating blood is community service but pretty much half of the responses. i’ve seen said no and half said yes. I am not certain if its actually considered community service, I did save threee lives when I donated blood.

Well… yeah. I have donated many, many times. It is a charitable act, but it isn’t like you saved someone from a burning building. Organizing a blood drive would go on an app… but I think you are pretty short on stuff to list if you have to put down blood donation. Just my opinion.

Oh thanks, I just want to know if its community service because it would be nice to include it along with my other volunteer activities.

If you have room, include it but realize it won’t count for much.

As someone whose baby needed 20 or so pints of blood, thank you.

I see, I’ll include it just in case.

IMHO: it seems like straw grasping.

If you did it once, then I would say no.
If you did it every time they came to your school for 4 years, then yes.

Its nice that you’ve donated blood. I encourage you to continue doing so, you are literally helping to save lives.

That said, doing something like this seems akin to volunteering a few hours at the “campus cleanup day” or the like. Good to have done, but the colleges that really care about ECs are looking for leadership and accomplishment, not just a couple of hours of participation. The good news is that at most colleges, and especially at most public colleges, ECs are not considered or mean little in admissions. Many colleges have made public their Common Data Set filing which lets you look to see which box they checked regarding ECs.

So go ahead and list it, just don’t expect it to make a big difference.

No my daughter donates blood regularly but think about it, what does it tell Adcoms about you. Probably nothing.
