I have been giving blood now every 2 months since I turned 17. I have saved probably 10 lives so far, and I think that is something to be very proud of. Do you think this would be considered a strong EC? It shows how I make sacrifices (a pint of blood and the inability to move my arm for a while) to help others. I think a college would really like that.

Thanks.

While it might be interesting to talk about in an essay (keyword, might, depending on how you spin it), I certainly wouldn't consider it an EC. Not by a long shot.

I wouldn't say EC, I'd say more like community service
Donating blood is not a "curricular"
I did the AIDS WALK New York back in 9th garde && I'm writing that under community service because thats what It falls under
get what I mean?

"Donating blood is not a "curricular"

-Exactly, that's why it's EXTRAcurricular.....

IMO, if you're looking to giving blood to give yourself a boost on your app, theres a problem.

Have we gotten to a point where we must get credit for every selfless thing we do?

"IMO, if you're looking to giving blood to give yourself a boost on your app, theres a problem"

What about any community service??? We shouldn't kid ourselves into believing that everyone does everything for purely selfless reasons...

I seriously do not see giving blood as an EC
Extra-Curriculars are bent more on your own enjoyment; not on someone else's benfit. && The OP said that he has been giving blood since, I think he's now deciding on writing that on the app. So I highly doubt he's just doing it to hype his application up

i don't really think it counts as an EC...

unfortunately, college applications quantify ECs by how many hours you put in over a specific time period. i'm not sure how you would put a time span on giving blood (i mean in terms of hours)...

maybe it could be a minor EC, but not a major one

or maybe it should go under communtiy service! ((hello0o0o))

yeah, i would put it under community service

What if I start a "blood donor club" at my school, and get a whole bunch of people to do it? Would that count?

ummm now I'm starting to wonder whether or not your doing it just as an extra+ on applications or doing it to help others.
It would be nice to start that but make sure its something "YOU" want to do.

NO, it's not...............

if you started a club and had meetings and stuff it would be an ec.

Yeah^......that counts as an EC

...although starting a club at the beginning of your senior year may appear fishy to the people reviewing your application. thousands of high school students donate blood. it would count as community service, but I wouldn't count it as a unique EC

Giving blood (along with most anything else) can be an EC, if one does so because it helps her gain an understanding of what she wants to do in college/life, AND is able to convey how and why this is so. The difficult part is being able to say (through essays, etc) why exactly certain things are ECs. Ecs are not limited to starting clubs and having jobs. The fact is, thousands of kids are bound to have done whatever it is you've done anyway, so don't discredit something that may be important in your life just because you may believe it isn't that uncommon.

How does giving blood help gain an understanding of your futures..what the?...kk I don't get it?

&& its not an EC, its counted as community service. I think CS weighs more than EC in general anyway

"How does giving blood help gain an understanding of your futures"

-The same way anything does.... That is up to the individual. Maybe going to the hospital to donate blood spurred an interest in the person do do research on different diseases, maybe it sparked an interest in a medical profession; I don't know. All I'm saying is that giving blood, like most anything else that is habitual, can be an EC if the person can justify it correctly.

"&& its not an EC, its counted as community service."

Community service is an EC..... Giving blood is both.
