I’m interested in medicine and think the EMR and EMT courses will be interesting to take. The only issue is it takes a decent amount of time and money to complete the courses. I’m wondering if it could count as an impressive extracurricular on my college application and if it’s worth the time and money. I am in sophomore year in high school and I plan to log many hours volunteering as an EMR and EMT after I am certified.
If you are interested in medicine, this is a great way to learn about it and to expose yourself to emergency medicine. (It will also make you a safe driver – nothing more sobering than seeing accidents.) Volunteering in this capacity will demonstrate maturity and responsibility and allow you to meet a lot of people you would not otherwise. All of this is good!
I’m not a fan of doing anything simply because you’re trying to improve your college application – life is too short, and it’s a bad idea to to alter your path because you think it’ll make others happy. Pursuing things that interest you, on the other hand, is always a good idea. I would think that if that’s the driver, you should make this investment in yourself and when you describe it on your application, it will be authentic.
