Does being in the IB Program help?

IB emphasizes breadth of knowledge; AP stresses depth of knowledge.

Going The Distance: Is that an IB GPA?
The GPA's I was qouting first term/year College courses.
Visirale:AP is not in depth study since it covers Pre-European invluence to current. (at least not the US History or any of the history courses at AP)

IB is not for everyone and IB is not a good program if you're getting D's and F's but IB is soo challenging and there's soo much work involved IB is for people that are strong at math and science but the IB seniors at my school are getting D's and F's and don't care about colleges so is IB worth it i don't know I'm pretty biased about the situation just because you hav IB doesn't mean you'll get into your 1st choice school I knew this girl that got waited listed and she was in IB or this girl got rejected from USC with A's and B's in IB but if you're going to a university outside the country yes it's worth it ; D

NerdyUSCgurl:Were the B's in HL or SL?
Has anyone looked at the links I put up about the A-levels and fairly compared it to what you did or are doing at IB in the same subjects?

IB is preferred. The school report lists AP, IB and honors together. Its not really right...

In India, our curriculum is ahead of the IB but we cant use it for college credits. My cousin does IB and we are ahead of the advanced level, in the sciences...

Really evil
UBC, Toronto is another case. 36/45 IB points automatically gives you 4000 canadian $. The equivalent is 95%. Thats total BS as the topper last year got 84%. What do students in much tougher curriculums than the IB can wish to capitulate do????????

kpusa1981: I'm not quite sure what you mean by IB GPA. I've never heard of such a term.

Does being in the IB Program help?

If you're able to tough it out and it's your type of style, yes.

IzzyJ,
Why is the IB course termed as 'Tough it out?'
Its no tougher than what I am doing and in fact is easier..

those freaking IAs and papers are killing me so they better weigh more than AP

Numbers, numbers, always numbers. What ever happend to learning for the sake of learning? I don't care if a class is hard or not, as long as the teacher is good and I will learn something. That's the whole point of an education. It's not about what GPA you have. Or am I missing something here?

theoretically and ideally, we learn for the sake of learning. realistically, we have to get into good colleges. or sometimes we have to much work to do so we just b.s. everything

It's the extra requirement of EE, I was thinking about, actually. And also depends on how your school schedules the Internal Assessments. Some schools pack the Group IV science lab, Econ commentaries, World Lit papers, math portfolios, geography write up thing, history IA all in the senior year. :S

yeah.. my school mostly packs all IA's and extra stuff into senior year.. december to be exact. can u imagine a history HL IA, ur prescribed title, and the final draft of ur EE being all due right around when u hear back from ur ealy decision college? especially for those that lack time management. i have to say, tho.. that experience taught me time management much better than anything else ever will.

ya! IB sure does teach you time management! all those extra stuffs like TOK EE CAS IA, annoying but helps prepare for college so i guess it's worth it.

What are you doing?

If it is AP then it is by no means harder. I have taken several AP's with lackluster effort and received B+ to A with 4 and 5 on the tests. IB is, according to me, 50% harder workload wise.

For example, my schedule these next three weeks

-Oral Presentation for English 4 HL - Analyze 30+, 40 line passages and be able to comment on a random one for 15 minutes.

-Math HL portfolio - 15 page analysis

-ToK Presentation - 1 hour presentation, I chose black holes

-ToK Essay- I don't have to do much on this one even though I have no sources. She said it was that good =).

-Physics General Relativity Lab- Come up with a specific type of frame of reference shift, describe it, and create a working model. I'm doing a circular orbit with a circular rotation around that rotating point.

-English 4 Project- Come up with a creative representation, activity, etc that deals with Eliot, Hemingway, etc. Atleast 10 hours for this one......

-Artwork as always. Art SL is a lot of work.....

-The usual homework. I have 7 IB classes and 2 AP classes. I have not studied once for AP government (2 semesters) or economics and have an 90 average. Average of 3+ hours daily in homework excluding these other things.

to answer that question PavelB no offense but alot people don't get an education just to learn they get an education simply for the money America's society is basically this better the school= better the salary

Yeah, materialism reigns supreme in the land of "opportunity and freedom".

time management? i end up doing everything the night before. gosh, i can't even remember what i wrote for my EE in the haze of 4:00 in the morning

Son is in AICE program. So I am very aware of the this debate. I asked Johns Hopkins--Adcom this question.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=135072&page=2&pp=20

AICE is more math and science based, students must learn the british terms and US terms. In the US there are 6 schools that offer the program. All these schools use it as a magnet program. It is not easy the A level exams can run over 3 days.

aice sounds very intense, but worth it. In my opinion

IB - Tough all around, and probably harder in every aspect when compared to AP; it is definitely more work, and harder to get higher scores on subjects because it includes your yearly assessments.

AICE - Best Math Science, and probably equal to IB/AP in the other subjects. Not necessarily more work, but harder work.

AP - Easiest to do well on the tests. Most like it has lower work loads than IB and maybe AICE, but class difficulty differs from school to school.

If your applying for math/sci oriented

AICE > AP/IB

Others

AP = IB = AICE

That's my take on it.
