does chicago not ask what major u want to go into? I cna't find it anywhere on the uncommon app. I'm assuming ur supposed to talk about it in y u want to go to U of C?

it does not ask for major no...but yes you should at least mention your area of interest in the why chicago essay

You do not need to mention your area of interest in the why chicago essay, that is assuming you already have one. I am pretty sure I didn't mention mine last year and got in, however, I did write my main essay about math... but the point is that you don't need to already know what you want to study and it won't hurt you to not list areas you may want to pursue at Chicago.

I never once mentioned that I wanted to major in Biology. I think I implied it in my research abstract explanation, but that's about it.

I got in EA. Don't worry about it.

Chicago does not ask because, according to what Libby said at a regional session, it is not a very meaningful question when students will be taking a core curriculum and are not expected to identify a major until after sophomore year.

And no--you do not need to talk about this in your "Why Chicago?" answer unless it is truly part of the why.

I agree with nimby. People change their minds all the time about what they want to study, so it's not as important what you want to study as it is that you want to study. In some situations, the U of C probably stands out as one of the best choices for those interested in a certain fields (particularly oddball fields, like Ancient Near Eastern studies and geophysics, which few schools offer, but even fields like evolutionary biology, anthropology, economics, sociology, math, physics, all for which Chicago is arguably "tops").

Then again, I'm studying in a field for which Chicago is not particularly "known," and I don't think I mentioned it on my application. No complaints here.

unalove, was that field english?
i'm asking b/c i'm interested in being an english major in chic. but there isn't (as) much material for me to rave about (as there would be with an "oddball field") in the why chic essay...

Anybody remember filling out the basic information sheet WAAAYYY back before you started your application? That asked your academic interests/likely major.
