How difficult is double-majoring with the honors program?

My daugher did not apply for the honors program, never even knew anything about it. Then we got a letter congratulating her for being accepted into the program. So, no, I’d say you didn’t miss anything.

She is a freshman and is planning to major and minor or double major but hasn’t been able to fit any classes for her minor into her schedule yet. Hopefully next year. She has been told that the honors kids take fewer core classes so it is actually easier for them to major/minor or double major.

Its a very small cohort…around 25 kids at Rose Hill, for example, per class. Its very rigorous and essentially the core curriculum on steroids.

So everyone who comes in gets considered for a scholarship, and those who are offered a scholarship are automatically considered for Honors…and who they pick and what credentials they require are a mystery to me…but rest assured its kids with uber stats…yes, plenty of EC’s…but uber stats.

There are other honors programs, by invitation, in various majors. These are typically offered on the invitation of faculty after freshman year grades come out…and Fordham ranks its students. While not as prestigious as the official Honors Program offered to incoming Freshmen, they are also very rigorous. And many kids double major. My kid did this.

So if you aren’t offered the Honors Program, don’t be freaked or bummed. Lots of good things await you.

Only 16 in the honors program at LC. (Well, 17 this semester because a girl from RH moved to LC.)

Thanks for the help. I got a likely letter and I’ve started falling in love with Fordham. I really hope all the scholarship and honors program stuff pulls through. (I’d go without getting into the honors program, but it seems perfect for me.)

What do you mean by a likely letter? Are you accepted already and wondering if you are in the honors program?

I applied EA, normal application and all. I got in. I got a letter about two weeks ago telling me that I was been invited to the Honors program. I did not have to do any other application. They just told me I was a strong applicant and stuff.

And yes, the Fordham people told me 15-17 kids get to be in it at LC.

Congrats Juan!

@TheJuanSoto Did they email you about the honors program or did they just send a letter?

Just a letter. I got the letter on Feb 7.

Fordham College at Lincoln Center, FCLC is a small liberal arts college with a student body of about 1,800. They have about 16 kids in the Honors Program. Fordham College at Rose Hill, FCRH, is a liberal arts college with appoximately 3,300 students and they have about 25 kids in the Honors Program.

Gabelli School of Business located on Rose Hill is about 1,800 students and it has its own Global Honors Business Program. Gabelli students must complete some of the same core requirements as FCRH but it is somewhat altered by their own curriculum. Students at FCRH may minor in business without being in Gabelli and take Gabelli courses. Students in Gabelli can double major or minor in a program at FCRH, and many do. FCRH and Gabelli students live in the same dorms for the most part, though Gabelli does have a special “wing” set aside for those who wish to live amongst other business students. That is handled by ResLife.

In short Gabelli and FCRH students spend a lot of time together, but they have separate agendas and internships etc. Its one of the strengths of Fordham.

Finally, there are other honors programs within majors, such as American Studies, American Catholic Studies (Curran Center), International Political Economy, Philosophy, Theology, etc, which are by invitation of the faculty, normally after freshman year to students with a gpa above 3.5.

So if you aren’t selected for the freshman Honors Program, don’t fret. There are plenty of opportunities to reach for the stars (for star performers!)

Congratulations Juan! Did you get a full-ride or full-tuition? And have you decided whether you’ll be going to Fordham? (:

@westie: I applied RD. The likely letter basically says that I’ve been informally accepted and I’ll get my formal acceptance the same time as everyone else (as long as I don’t screw up too much).

@CORVIDS: Full tuition, but room and board are not a problem for us. Definitely going.

I’m not certain, but I believe the only ‘full rides’ are Division 1 athletic scholarships. Fordham’s highest academic scholarship is full tuition. And how they decide who gets those and who doesnt is beyond me.

My son’s good friend got tuition/room/board as part of the honors program (he is not a varsity athlete) but I’m not sure that everyone does.

^^^…thanks. That is interesting and surprises me. In my kids’ class she was friends with several Honors Students and to a person it was either Full Tuition or something close. Fordham is very quirky on financial aid and scholarships. It is what it is. I will ask around and see what they say.

Perhaps his friend got one of the Presidential or Jesuit Scholarships which also include dorms (maybe he pays for food?) – I never thought it appropriate to ask for details. At this point I think everyone just has to wait for their final aid letter and it is what it is. There is no predicting…

I was offered my full tuition scholarship when I got accepted, which was about two months before my Honors offer.

Does anyone know if regular decision applicants have heard about Honors program acceptances yet and/or if all decisions have already gone out?

My son got an email enviting him to an Honors program reception during visiting day. He never got an invitation to an Honors program so far. So I don’t know what this email means. Do all applicants get this email? I’ll try calling admissions today to find out. Maybe he’ll get something in the mail today. He got a very minimum scholarship with his admission letter. I expected more since he got a likely letter first week of February and also received a free application from them.
