Fordham Honors Program

I was accepted EA to Fordham with a Dean's Scholarship, meaning I guess I was among their top applicants, but it says nothing in my acceptance letter about the honors program. Does that mean I'm not in? Do I have to apply separately? Am I too late or too early to be worrying about this?

The Honors College is 25 students at each campus, more or less. Its uber selective. And its basically a four year program. Normally those offers come at or near the time of offer of admission but sometimes a bit later depending on who accepts an offer at Fordham and who goes up the ladder to an Ivy for example, opening up a space. So it can come later.

The stats of Honors Program kids typically are near perfect scores. Not sure how they decide, but anecdotally that is who gets it.

Dont freak or be insulted. A lot of brilliant kids with high stats are not offered and some of them actually prefer that because the Honors Program is so demanding and restrictive.

Many departments at Fordham have their own “honors programs” which are offered after the freshmen grades are in and class rank comes out in May. They will notify you they are interested. You may get several offers from English, Philosophy, Theology, Business, Political Science etc. And that gives you the power of choice. Its not quite as prestigious as the Freshman Honors Program but who cares?

My kid did that and so did several of her buddies. And they all finished Phi Beta Kappa.

Honors Program is special, rigorous and extremely competitive. If you dont get it, just shrug and move along.

Thanks for your response! I didn’t know Fordham honors was so selective. Out of curiosity, what kind of stats do you need?

They only take 16 at LC.
You don’t actually apply for it. They send a letter in the acceptance packet notifying you that you have been selected. I don’t know what stats they are looking for.

Thanks Lefty. I heard it was 25 at both schools, but that makes sense since LC is so much smaller than Rose Hill. Rose Hill has between 5-6000 undergraduate students. LC has 1800-2000, I believe.

Some students learn about their selection with the offer packets. Some will find out later, as its always the case that someone preselected will opt for another offer, typically an Ivy.

And they pick some kids from the RD pool as well.

The stats needed are not known as they dont publish the stats of those getting in obviously. But anecdotally they are well north of 1500 SAT. I also know people with uber stats that werent offered who did get huge scholarships and came to Fordham regardless. One kid was in my daughter’s class. So I dont know what goes on with all of that.

My DD is in the Honors Program at RH. There are about 36 students in her grade in the RH honors program. Dr. Nasuti explained that they expanded the program to 36 students a few years ago when they accepted 37 students, aiming for a class of 25 or so, and all but one accepted, so they expanded the program to accommodate the extra students and realized that it worked out well, so kept it larger.

She applied regular decision and received a letter in the mail inviting her to join the honors program in early April, a little over a week after the acceptance packet came in the mail.

She has a NMSF scholarship and had very high stats. I don’t know if this made a difference but her application and high school record reflected that she was a ‘humanities’ kid - most of her AP’s were in humanities and social sciences, she won writing awards, did programs in museums, etc.

She says that her fellow honors program students are brilliant and amazing. She has enjoyed and been challenged in her non honors classes, as well. She loves the honors program and has been having a very good college experience at Fordham.

At least it was 16 in my daughter’s class.
Two dropped out so they were down to 14. Someone transferred from RH to LC so now they are at 15.
I don’t know if later classes had more. If they did, it wouldn’t be many.

Fordham informed me that decisions are not made until February. Other things I was informed were consistent with hen4763’s post, above.

Is the decision subjective (do they look at ECs, essays, etc.) or is it just based on SAT scores?

Hey there! I’m a current freshman in the Program (also on the Honors board) and I’d just like to insert a little introduction cum publicity plug into this thread:

Re: Invitations, the admissions council is asked to pass along applications of exceptional applicants whose documents demonstrate a “deep, dark” desire for knowledge—as our director puts it. The scholarship committee is not in communication with the Program, nor does it have any control over the applications considered. Invitations are rolling on strength of consideration and the time applications are received; the first batches come out mid to late February. This year, we’ve planned a special surprise for applicants, but I don’t think I can let it out of the bag.
There aren’t ‘reserved’ spots, but interested freshman who can inquire about joining for their second semester. This, of course, is not guaranteed.

Re: the curriculum, it’s a much more intensive version of the Great Books program as implemented at Chicago and Columbia. The only difference is that Fordham students are held to a much higher standard and cover more material in greater depth. The only comparable experience would be the St. John’s Colleges, and we actually have a few faculty who are alumni.

Tip: If you’re honestly interested in learning for learning’s sake and the Program curriculum, and you can commit yourself to Fordham and the Program, you should contact the administrator or director immediately to express interest.

Sorry if I’ve rambled, but I hope that just goes to show how much I love Fordham and the opportunity it offers!

Thanks, Mongo 460. Just to add that the Gabelli Honors is separate from the Arts & Sciences Honors – different selections committees, different timing, different programing.

By email today: DS (EA applicant) was informed that he has been admitted to the Honors Program of Fordham College at Rose Hill!

Congrats to your DS itllbeok!

Thanks, LeftyLou! We’re really excited!
