does first quarter grade matter?

hello

I failed my classes so im ending first quarter with 4 B’s and A’s (3.1 ish…)

when submitting application for regular decision, does the admission office look at first quarter grades? or do they look at just first semester grades?

thank you

( my high school follows semester system & our first semester grades come out end of January )

In general, if your quarter grading period is a progress report and not a final grade that is reported on your transcript then I don’t see how a college would know or ask for these grades.

Many colleges will ask for first semester grades.

They look at whatever is on your transcript.

Our HS shows grades for each quarter, so a mid-year report will show individual grades for the first and second grading periods of the year.

How did you fail your classes but get B’s?

@RichInPitt most of my schools are reach & I got 4 B’s which is way more than the other years… it really isn’t failing but I shouldn’t be getting these grades if I want to get accepted… :frowning:

@svlab112 since first semester ends in end of January, do you know if college admission officers consider first semester grades when they’re accepting people?? or do they only look at quarter grades cause I THINK our counselor sends them…

I would think if your school is on a semester system then your counselor has no obligation to send 1st quarter grades and I would stop him or her before he/'she does. 1st semester grades will of course be examined, unless you are applying ED. I don’t think colleges typically ask for unofficial/non-transcript mid-semester grades.

Yes. Many schools will look at first semester grades. Your target school’s website will include this information.

My kids attend California UCs. They do not consider 12 grade first semester grades. However, during the application process, all other schools did request 1st semester grades.

I have never heard of a HS sending mid-semester progress reports. Ask your GC for confirmation.

In what world is a B a failing grade.

Several of the schools my daughter applied EA or ED to required first quarter grades and interim grades if you did not have actual first quarter grades (which she does not). Her counselor submitted the interim grades on the option report within CommonApp. I think most RD schools just required semester grades.
