My mom is default on her own student loans so I'm pretty sure that means she is not eligible for the PLUS loan. Does she have to apply anyways so I can get the extra $4000 in federal loans even though we already know she will be denied? She doesn't want to apply because she says being denied will make her credit even worse.

I believe she has to be denied a Plus for you to be eligible for additional Direct Loan money. So yes…she has to apply and be denied the plus loan.

See [FinAid | Professional Judgment | Additional Unsubsidized Stafford Loan](http://www.finaid.org/educators/pj/additionalstafford.phtml)
Remember these extra $4000 are unsubsidized loans, federal government does not pay the interests while you’re in school, you do.

I realize that it is unsubsidized, but I have no other options as I would like to avoid private loans at all cost. That $4000 should cover the last bit of costs not covered by my other federal loans, so it would be really helpful.
