Overnight visits

Does anyone know if admissions will arrange an overnight for accepted students so they can get a feel for the campus and sit in on classes?

In the admissions packet there is a brochure listing dates for special day-long group sessions for admitted students and their family members. There are several dates listed for each of the Penn State colleges and these dates usually fall on weekdays. These college-specific session include a presentation by the college, lunch, a student panel(for students) a financial aid presentation(for family members), and a campus tour.
There are also several dates that are not specifically tailored to any one college(i.e., they don't include the college presentation), and these dates fall on Saturdays.
I haven't heard or read anything about student overnight visits to campus. It would be great if they could do that, but I assume that, with the sheer volume of admitted students, along with the housing crunch(esp. this year)that something like just isn't logistically possible. It looks like even the First-Year Testing Counseling and Advising Program session on campus where students, among other activities, select their classes is just a day-long event. I'm not aware of any opportunities to sit in on classes, however that may be worth a phone call to admissions to find out.

I read about the day-long group sessions for admitted students, but that's really not enough to get a sense of a school. I'm going to call admissions to see if they can arrange something; the housing crunch isn't really an issue, since when other colleges have admitted students stay overnight, they tell them to bring a sleeping bag, etc. University of Wisconsin offers two-day programs for admitted students where they stay with undergrads in the dorms, eat in the dining halls, and attend classes with them; my son will be attending one of those programs in early March. That seems like a really valuable opportunity. I hope PSU can help us work something out since we don't know any current students there and can't make our own arrangements.

plaid freak -
Besides admissions, you might want to contact the College to which your S has been admitted. They might be able to help set him up with a student in his prospective major. Also, ask your friends if they know anyone with kids at PSU who might be able to help you out.

Thanks, Karp. Good suggestions.

When we went to FTCAP it began in the morning and we are from NY so we arrived the night before. (stayed in the Nittany Lion Inn)
The last thing my son did was choose his classes (probably scheduled last so you don't leave early) and it was late afternoon so we just drove home.

Yes, scheduling is late in the afternoon. By the time S completed everything it was about 5:00 pm

rlm919, doesn't the FTCAP take place after students make the final decision to attend PSU? My son would like to spend some time at PSU so that he can decide if it's the right place for him.

duh, that is a very good point...sorry!
Actually his FTCAP was originally scheduled in May right before APs so he rescheduled and got July.
If I recall correctly he did attend an information session for his college sometime in the spring before he made his decision. Here is a link for planning accepted student visits:

I do not see anything about overnights but maybe there is more info about those possibilities once you sign up.
