does tamu have one admissions office for all colleges/majors?

For example, does tamu use the same office for admitting into mays as they do fro into Petroleum Engineering?

Do different colleges have different testing requirements?

If I qualify for automatic academic admission (top 25% and over 1300 SAT), do I get to choose any major, department?

Or are some majors exempt from auto admission, I wouldnt think so? (I want to major in petroleum eng. )

Thanks

No you do not choose which department at will. You can be top 25% and 1300 SAT and not get into engineering (for example).

So auto admit only gets you into TAMU. Once you have been accepted how are the engineering students chosen?

Rolling admissions. High math SAT/ACT. Class rank. A lot of factors affect how engineering applicants are chosen. Just as the other colleges within A&M too.

It has been stated by an actual A&M admissions officer repeatedly on another discussion board that (for freshman) you are admitted into the university as a whole and then admitted to your major based on available spaces. Therefore, students admitted earlier in the rolling admissions process have a better chance of getting into their first choice major. Not surprisingly, the business school and engineering schools fill up quickly as those tend to be the most desired majors of auto admit students.

It’s first come first served for major choices. All the more reason to apply as early as you can.

^^ That is a very good point. I applied in early October and heard back within a few weeks of my admission to TAMU and engineering. The earlier you apply, the quicker you will hear back and the quicker you will be able to put a deposit down on your housing.

okay I am kind of confused

because I am not a review admit, my SAT scores and class rank would have already been looked at and qualified for auto admit right

at that point is it first come-first serve for auto-admits

are you saying they would review my application again for engineering?

or if they have room in engineering and I am auto-admit they would put me in automatically(I plan on applying in early August so room shouldnt be a problem)

Yes, it is first come first served, because A&M does rolling admissions.

After you are first admitted to the university, you are then considered for your first college/major. If there are no spaces within that college/major, A&M will consider you for your second college/major. They will most likely put you in engineering if you applied that early and have a relatively good math SAT/ACT.

Per the following link:

[ACT/SAT Test Scores](http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshmen/gettingin/tipsApplying/testScores.aspx)

The only restriction is having a minimum math test score of 550 SAT/24 ACT. If there are openings in your major of choice when you are accepted and you meet those scores, you’re in for engineering.

My daughter’s Perspective Student Counselor recommended August application submissions for Mays Business and Engineering because of competitive limited spaces for incoming freshmen. She stated that enrollment in those colleges were closed by early September the past couple of years. DD submitted August 6 and accepted August 16 first choice (Mays).

Automatic acceptance is to university only, not to specific college.

wow applying in august?

Your daughter got good advice. Why not apply in August. Your class ranking is completed your Jr yr in High School - you should have taken SAT/ACT’s by then,
Why not? that is when the application date opens.

by august most kids have probably only taken the SAT once.(thats how it was for me)

i applied in november; it took them til march to tell me i was waitlisted

I would definitely apply as early as possible. If you wait til the final deadline: you are late in my opinion. If you wait til right before the scholarship app deadline (Dec 1st): you are still late in my opinion. If you apply between August and the beginning of October then you are right where you need to be.
