does the lack of a campus bother you?

Does it bother you current students at all? Or do you just love NYU for everything it has? Do you feel something is lacking b/c there is no real campus?

Share your experiences!

I am wondering about the same thing.

Everyone emphasizes on the fact that NYU has no campus... almost a way to deterr me from applying.

So any input from actual students would be nice.

How many cows do you need to tip to feel like a college student? Washington Square Park is right there......it suffices to my way of thinking. What is the big deal?

my question is this, Where do kids at NYU hang out lets say after class on a weekday or even on the weekends. I mean i know i wont be going to the met or some main attraction every day. Is there any laid back hang out places with just college students.

its new york...im sure there is anything and everything (except for the beach : ( .....LOL)

ace are you serious? NYC is your hangout place...bars, clubs, lounges...dorms...walking around the city...the gym...if you were on a campus what would you do? NYU's campus is much more interesting. I was worried about the lack of campus as well, until I realized the area around Washington Square Park feels just like a campus...when you walk blocks down you're at Union Square which is hectic and you can go shopping. You can go to spice for lunch (awesome tai food) or anywhere in the city. You'll never be bored, unless you're antisocial and don't know how to make friends and are stuck in your dorm the 4 yrs of your college life.

^OMG I LOVE SPICE! I've eaten there twice already haha. its so yummy. mmm. I agree, the city is awesome and impossible to be bored there. But then again - I don't know if the lack of school spirit, sports teams, frat influence, campus life, bothers students at all.

ace, on weekdays, not much happens, people will get together at starbucks or their dorms to study or play poker or video games, or the same thing they do at every college...nothing major happens on weekdays anywhere. even if you have a traditional campus, what are you going to do, sit under a tree?

weekends, people generally go clubbing, dorm parties, bar hopping, movies, shows, etc etc.

people tend to over estimate the importance of a campus, sure it looks pretty, but it doesnt do much at all fun wise. everythign within 10 blocks of here, has atleast 50% nyu students all the time anyways...and personally i feel its better that you have so many oppurtunities to party off campus, since you dont have to worry about the school breaking it up and *****ing.

i visited a couple nyc schools and they all hinted at nyu's "lack of campus".. the tour guide at columbia said she picked loved columbia because it had gates and wasn't "buildings with flags"..

i say, whatever.. nyu has greenwich village, wash sqaure park.. everything you could possibly want. who needs grassy hills and stadiums when you are in the best part of the best city in the world?

At NYU, NYC is your playground- you are constantly surrounded by interesting, amazing things to do- movie premiers, theatre, clubs, incredible people watching at all times, etc. etc. etc.....these things are not attained at a regular campus.....

I look at it this way, NY is the greatest city on earth, and this is the cheapest rent you will ever get in NY. So, aside from a great university, you get the experience of a lifetime, education, fun, friends, and first run movies, plays, exhibits, shopping, culture, diversity, etc. Where else can you get to know a homeless person? Its one big reality show, non-stop, and fun, fun, fun...

Doesn't get much better than that does it??? So......you cannot tip cows but you have to sacrifice somewhere.

basically it comes down to this...the campus vs non campus debate is misdirected...

if you are outgoing, you will have more fun and excitement then you can at probably any other college anywhere

if you are reclusive or shy, it might be difficult, since the lack of campus and school wide events make it hard for you to find an extended nich

Good Topic...

Even though I don't go to NYU, I have visited it and absolutely love it. NYU is definately my first choice. Washington Square Park is awesome. Something hott is always going on there. And to the person who said there is nothing to do???....umm....NYC is the most lively city in the world. I wouldn't worry about anything to do, but rather worry about too many things going on to concentrate on school work. In a city with boradway, New York Knicks, and the hottest clubs and resteraunts with the msot diverse people ever....who wouldn't want to go to NYU? If your perception of NYU is not enough stuff to do your definately wrong.

PS, I already live in NY so my opinion might be a little bias.

Great closer on that one!!! Answered it all then sucked us right in. Very good.

i live in 3rd north which is a 15 minute walk from washington square so i have really only been there twice or thrice.. but 3rd north has a courtyard where u will usually find a bunch of people sitting around singing, reading, doing hw, just relaxing etc..otherwise u can go to palladium (the gym/dining hall) or just roam the streets on nyc (theres always a lot to explore! plus u will find so many college kids its insane).. so dont worry theres tons of stuff to do.. weekends in NYC are the best ever because there are so many places to go.. bars, clubs, restaurants, concerts, shows.. there will be something for everyone.. i chose NYU over USC, McGill and some other places in England and i dont regret it at all because NYU and NYC is just the most amazing place to be..trust me u will love it too..

i live right by washington square park, and there's ALWAYS something going on there. it's absolutely exciting! the thing is, greenwich village is full of nyu students during the day, so it is all but a campus in location.

the thing about nyu is that as a freshman, you actually walk/travel less than you would at a campus school on average. my friends at ucla have to walk 20 minutes to go to class whereas my classes are next door. the farthest my friends walk is 10 minutes.

i personally like not having a campus because we aren't restricted. i've noticed that in my immediate nyu community, there isn't a lot of drinking/drugs because we have waaaayyy better things to do. i think that's what they do at campuses that are strictly defined and secluded.

of course, the downside to not having a campus is that it is more difficult to form a community--you have to really make an effort to make and maintain friends, which, arguably, is worth the work. nyu isn't just a college experience, it's a real life experience!

"i've noticed that in my immediate nyu community, there isn't a lot of drinking/drugs"

haha, guess you don't live in hayden.

woot hayden...if I get accepted ED, thats my 1st choice for housing :)...not crappy like weinstein, but u get best of both worlds (partyin & good housing) :)..I hear people at 3rd North (frosh) find it harder to make friends since they live further away from campus....is this true? Or is that only the case because they aren't too outgoing? I'm outgoing, so I don't think it'll be a problem for me, but I think ima stick w/ dorms.

hayden definately is the most fun im glad i picked it

but uhall is really huge and has nice looking rooms...all the good parties ive went to have been in uhall (you have a common room bigger than most trad. dorms). all u can really do in hayden is pregame, though people have been creative using doors as beer pong tables.
