Study Hall

So, my question is, would the study halls I take be looked down upon, or would it be dulled and overlooked compared to my schedule? Most of my classmates don't take study hall, and I am not ranked that high because of that reason(weird class ranking system) .

I’m pretty sure many people take study halls. There’s nothing wrong with that, and your schedule is rigorous anyway. At my school we have 8 periods a day, but only 7 are allowed to be classes. In other words, we HAVE to have 1 study hall. And I go to a school thats ranked in the top 5 (for STEM) nationally, so its not like we have really lax requirements. A friend who also goes to an extremely competitive school has the same study hall requirement. It’s pretty common, so don’t worry at all.

Thank you.

My class rank is down because of it though(like 12/200). My GPA is 4.0(No weights), but our school does a total points system. Even if I make an A in an AP course, it is still 4.0. So, actually, I have one less class than everyone.

Can I explain this to colleges? If so, how?

You can ask your counselor to explain it if you really need to, but admissions officers will not penalize you if you have a 4.0 and the schedule you originally posted, which is rigorous enough. Also, being 12/200 puts you in the top 6%, which is great. No need to worry. Just focus on other things. Academically, you’re doing great. Best of luck.

There are 5 AP classes on your schedule. You don’t need to worry about having a study hall. You’re obviously challenging yourself. Admissions officers understand that you have to do the work sometime.

My school required us to take study halls certain semesters…
