Does UCSC Admit By Major? (CS - Transfer)

I was just wondering because I heard somewhere that they don’t admit by major and that you don’t actually declare your major officially until you get there.
When I was looking at the website that seemed to be true (https://ua.soe.ucsc.edu/admissions) but I’m really curious because UCSC is my number one choice but I won’t have my last math class finished until the summer before I’d transfer so I was wondering if this could help my chances of getting in (I have a 3.57 transfferable as of now)?
But it also sounded a bit like the college has to accept you too so I’m still a bit confused… if anyone could clear that up and tell me if I actually have a chance of getting in that would be great.

Thanks.

UCSC does not admit by major for Freshman and they have up to end of Sophomore year to declare a major.

Transfer applicants must have the required pre-req and major related courses to be completed for transfer.

See Selection criteria and the ***information.
Selection Criteria

To be considered for admission by UC Santa Cruz, junior-level transfer students must have completed the following no later than the end of the spring 2018 term:

Complete at least 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of UC-transferable coursework.
Complete the following UC-transferable course pattern with minimum C (2.00) grades. Each course must be at least 3 semester units/4 quarter units:
Two English composition courses
One course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning
Four courses from at least two of the following subject areas: arts and humanities, social and behavioral science, and physical and biological sciences
Earn at least an overall UC GPA of 2.40, but higher GPAs are more competitive.
****Complete required lower-division courses with the required grades/GPA for the intended major.

And this is from the link you posted. ::::::::::::::::::::::
The BSOE strongly encourages applications from transfer students. Due to the prerequisite structure for upper-division courses, prospective transfer students should have completed as many of the lower-division requirements for the respective majors as possible to complete the degree within a reasonable time. Students must plan carefully because many courses must be taken sequentially.

Transfer students should not follow the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) because it will not provide transfer students with enough mathematics and engineering courses to allow them to complete BSOE programs at UCSC in two years.

Students who apply as transfer students with junior status (60 semester units or 90 quarter credits or more of transfer credit) who wish to earn a degree from the BSOE must indicate a BSOE major as their first choice on their UC application. (Students may also indicate an alternative BSOE major as their second choice.)

Junior transfers who do not list a BSOE major on their application to UCSC will not be considered for admission to such majors after the first day of their first quarter on campus.

Are you doing TAG? Is the Math course a requirement for transfer and TAG? If so, you need to complete all TAG required courses by Spring.

@Gumbymom Thanks for your response! No I’m not doing TAG because I’m not eligible without that last math class (which I think is like Calculus for Engineers or something )… It said it’s required but I’ve heard of people getting into the UCSC CS program while still missing a class or two. It also said on the link I posted that students should have all or close to all of their required classes done so I’m wondering if I still have a shot at getting in without it (although I do plan to take it in the summer).

I would call admissions directly to see if the missing class will be an issue or if taking in the summer will be fine.

@lovelei It wouldn’t hurt to try to TAG even if you may not have 3 or 5 of the major prep classes done. I was accepted this past spring with a major prep course missing for cs: game design, so they can still accept you if you’re only missing one or two of the major prep classes. Of course it’s always safer to have them all done, but my gpa was similar to yours when I got accepted. They’ll tell you in orientation, at least for engineering majors that what they accepted you for is what your major is. Everyone just has to formally put in the paper work to declare your major once you start in the fall.

@cantcode Yes, thank you! That helps a lot. I called and they said pretty much the same thing- that it’s better if you complete all the pre-reqs but it’s still possible to get in if you’re only missing or two.
And I’m actually gonna TAG to UCI for Informatics because the only math they require is stats which I’ve done but UCSC is still my first choice.
