i hope i phrase my title correctly. on my april sat, i received V. 660, W. 630, and Math 790, i am hoping to raise both verbal and writing obviously this coming oct.. My early decision school is vanderbilt, and i heard that it takes the highest score from each section, so does that mean in the coming october, i can forget math and aim for 700s V and W, and the college would not care? so if i get 630 math, 700+ verbal and 700+ writing, what would the college say about that? "this kid is a slacker, forget her", or would they ignore my second math score?...

they take the highest...

however I can't believe that having inconsistencies in your testing can be seen as a good thing. you're in a tough spot. technically, it shoudln't matter, but im pretty sure they see all scores from all the tests. and that math could be seen as a fluke.

which is yet another reason why i let my first-time scores stand and didn't retake anything.

wut did u get

I received a 710w 740v and 670m

My rationale was that verbal is often "luck of the draw" (some passages are just not your cup of tea) so I didn't want to ruin that score. And I was never great at math (I wasn't expecting anything awesome) so marked improvement would be unlikely unless I studied for five hours a day. There was a much higher probability that one of my good scores would go down, even if my lower score(s) went up.

However, slightly contradicting what I said above, I think retaking it wouldn't be bad in your case. Math doesn't vary like reading passages do - you either know it or you don't. That leads me to believe that your 790 will in all likelihood not dip below 700 and will probably be solid mid-700s, if not another 790 or 800 ;). Furthermore, if you think that the verbal section just wasn't "feeling" you, you have another reason to retake. Perhaps you'll get better passages, and if you don't, it's still another shot.

I do think that, before you retake the SAT, you should brush up on grammar and such. The writing section is not that hard if you are familiar with the rules and the tricks the SAT uses in it.

tkz alot mandolin, that helped alot, are you a senior by the way? where do you go to school? just wonderin..

I just graduated from high school and I'll be at Vanderbilt next year. PM me if you'd like if you need any advice on apps or whatever. Not to say I'm an expert, but I did go through it all :P
