Does your college have dorms that have visiting hours? I find it very hard to believe that in this day and age colleges would have rules restricting students from having visitors in their dorm after certain hours at night. I went to college in the 70's (I know . . . I'm old). All the dorms were single sex, but people came and went as they pleased with no restrictions.

I think only schools lost in time like BYU and some catholic universities have visiting hours.

Not visiting hours, but…

Between 8am and midnight, all residential students have access to all dorms. At night, key card access is restricted to the actual residents of each dorm. We are still allowed to have visitors, but at night they need to be accompanied by their host at all times.

Here, there are 2 different types of visitors: guests and overnight guests. After 2 am on week nights, your guests switch to overnight guests and you can only have like 20 of theses a semester. But Fridays and Saturdays there aren’t any visiting hours.

No visiting hours. Dorms always need key card access but that’s it. Anyone can have anyone over til whenever.

Visiting hours til 1 am on weeknights but no restrictions on weekends. Keys to access your dorm at all hours of the day, and your key doesn’t let you into other residence halls.

I believe Loyola Marymount (Jesuit) has key cards that work more restrictively after certain hours, and opposite sex in common rooms after maybe 2AM. I had rules in the 70 as well (in a co-ed dorm…); I believe many HBCU’s do.

My school has visitation hours: 1 pm - 10 pm from Sunday - Thursday and 1 pm - midnight on Friday and Saturday. We also have only single-sex dorms.

At my school we have 12am-10am Weekdays and 2am-10am Weekend visiting hours for members of the opposite sex on the top 2 floors, the freshman floors. On the other floors it is 24 hours.

Upperclassmen have visitation hours from Sunday - Thursday, 10 am - 1 am, and Friday - Saturday, 10 am - 2 am. We also have lounges we can vote (by floor) to make 24-hours visitation.

Freshmen have more limited visitation for the first 4 weeks: Sunday - Thursday, 10 am - 11 pm, and Friday - Saturday, 10 am - 1 am. They also can vote to have 24-hour visitation for their lounges.

Upperclassmen have no restrictions, but for first years you cannot have overnight visitors on the weeknights, which helps have fewer roommate conflicts.

Last year I was at a Christian school and we had visitation for the opposite sex twice a week for four hours only. This year I transferred to my state’s u. After 6 you have to sign in your guests, with a maximum of two. They have to be signed out after two days.

I’m really sort of shocked that there schools that have visiting hours. None of you mentioned where you are going to school. Am I to assume they are private religious colleges?

No I go to Pitt. I think the idea is to try to make the quiet hours actually somewhat quiet. So you can have 1 or 2 people over, but not 15 friends who are going to keep all your floormates up. Though here on the weekends it doesn’t matter.

MedSchHopeful – I did look at your dorm visitation policies online. You are not prohibited against having visitors after certain hours at night (or overnight). However, they do limit you to no more than 24 overnight guests per semester.

Maybe I didn’t make it clear in my original posting. Does anyone live in a dorm where they are NOT allowed to have overnight guests or guests after a certain time at night?

umdclassof80 - in my case, you’d be right. I go to Baylor.

I go to a huge state school and freshman dorms have visiting hours. So no. It isn’t a religious school. Or a private school.

The first semester, all freshman dorms do not allow visitors of the opposite sex between 2 am and 10 am. Otherwise, you can have as many guests as you want.

The second semester, freshman dorms vote on whether or not they want to allow visitation. If they vote yes, then the visitation policy changes to allowing visitors of the opposite sex from 10 am Friday to 2 am Sunday.

We have co-ed dorms though. And a couple of my guy friends slept over in one of my friend’s rooms when we were all too tired to go back to our own rooms. xD

Wow, I didn’t even know that colleges (besides religious ones) still had visiting hours.

It’s pretty much a free-for-all in dorms here. There might be some rule about no overnight guests for more than three days but I had one for a week and no one even noticed.

AUGirl – I’m quite surprised that a public state college has visitation rules. I did find an article online that pointed out that this practice of restricting visitors of the opposite sex seems to be more prevalent in the south. Personally, I see these dorm visitation rules as being outdated.

Really? I don’t find it odd at all. But I guess I’m just used to it.

And it’s not really that bothersome. It’s very easy to get around the rules in a co-ed dorm. You just get one of your guy friends to sign in your friend and you’re good to go.

Honestly, I’m a little surprised that more schools don’t have policies.
