Being a domestic applicant (US citizen or permanent resident) gives you a slightly better chance of getting accepted to MIT when compared to an international applicant.(Due to the limited number of seats MIT has for international applicants)

Well my question is, If I get a SB-1 visa which gives me the status of a returning permanent resident (because I have been out of the US for way too long); will I be considered as a domestic applicant or an international applicant.

If international, then is there a different criteria that students get selected from (the best of the best) or is it the same as the domestic applicants.

Would really appreciate your help.

When are you applying?

This year, probably early action (October - December) if I am considered as a permanent resident.

Does the SB-1 visa end up to a new green card ?
MIT’s website states that “permanent residents” are people holding a green card or in the process of getting one.

This would be a question to direct to the admissions office, or possibly the MIT International Scholars Office (though I imagine the admissions office would be the best choice right off the bat).

From a quick read of the State Department website, it seems to me that permanent residents awarded an SB-1 visa are considered to have been permanent residents continuously by the US government, and therefore would be considered permanent residents by MIT. But I am not an admissions officer (or a State Department official!).

Thanks for your help, I’ll contact the admissions office directly. Although, it may not be a good time since they might be busy reading applications for the class of 2017.

I guess I’ll contact them anyway.
Thanks again for the very prompt answer.

^don’t worry about that, the people answering the phones aren’t the people reading the apps. :)

Thanks for the clarification
I’ll email them tonight (morning in Massachusetts)

It has been 4 days since I’ve sent the email, yet I still haven’t gotten a reply.
I’ll try sending it again tonight.
