I got in, and I'm thrilled. ...But I have no idea how to drive... Since I've never been to HMC and the areas in its vicinity, can anyone who's been there tell me if I can survive?
Thanks a lot.

You’ll be fine!

Freshmen aren’t allowed parking spaces on campus anyways (new policy as of this year). And in any case, you’ll probably have some sort of connections to cars (whether it be friends with vehicles, upperclassmen, or proctors).

I do know how to drive, but I’ve never actually had a car while I’ve been at Mudd, and I’m about to graduate. People with cars will generally help you if you need to get around, as long as they aren’t super busy.

Congratulations on your acceptance!

Mine also was accepted and doesn’t drive. We’ve been out for a visit - I’m sure it will be fine. You can easily walk to town and there is also public transportation.
I couldn’t drive when I got to college and I still couldn’t when I left - I was fine.
And - Congratulations!

Thanks !!!

geek_son was offered a car and said “No thanks.” His take: Parking is a pain; Mudders seldom leave the “Mudd Bubble;” and rides, when necessary, can usually be obtained from friendly upperclassmen for gas money, chocolate, Martinelli’s sparkling cider, or sometimes just a good hug.

Had my son attended Mudd, he would have done so without ever taking a car.

My son is content without a car. He does have a bicycle, however. I think he uses it quite a bit.

My son, a junior, has a car, but he drives very little. He has gone through two skateboards, however. He also regularly gives others a lift when he doing the Vons and Target run. So, on balance, I agree that life is happy and easy without a car.

I’m a freshman, and I don’t have my license. As mentioned above, most freshman aren’t allowed to have cars anyway. Everything you need is walking distance anyways. If there is somewhere you really do need to go thats further away, upperclassmen in your dorm with cars would be more than willing to drive you. Having a bike is helpful though, especially if you have classes at the other colleges. It definitely isn’t necessary though. If you do get/ bring a bike make sure to lock it though because that is a big problem (non-mudd students often come and take bikes).

Or a skateboard, a longboard, rollerblades, freelines, or unicycle. :)

geek mom, those are all useful but the issue with those is they aren’t as good for coming back from off campus classes like at Pomona (there is a bit of an uphill slope from there to Mudd). Those are all definitely common methods of getting around campus though.

^ Point worth considering, though it doesn’t seem to slow my son down getting around multiple campuses and occasionally into the Village. YMMV, jiaoda.

Thanks again!!
