Dorm fridge

Where is the best place to buy a dorm fridge near campus? I know I can rent one but i want to buy it so I will have it for other years.

thanks

There’s a Walmart in Bloomington. Unfortunately, not sure if they will hold any items and if you arrive at the same time as everyone else, they might be out of stock.

Maybe call and ask if they hold? I know BB&B do, but not sure they have minifridges. I bought one from Walmart for $80 on sale, with an included freezer portion big enough for an ice tray.

Yankees another option if you don’t mind buying used is the Hoosier 2 Hoosier sale, I’d think it is on the 24th. Look it up on FB, let me know if you need a link. Looks like they have almost everything (left or donated from previous students).

There is a Target at the College Mall near campus. During move-in, they basically turn all main walkway aisles into a dorm furnishing warehouse with fridges, microwaves, storage cubes, bicycles, etc everywhere. Downside is that they are always crowded. Last year they did a good job of keeping people moving with every register open and plenty of staff. You should be able to pick up anything you need there. Walmart is on the other side of Bloomington, but always a good option too.

We did our campus visit last year during the first week of school and we also visited the Target. I saw lots of mini-fridges and microwaves in the center island at Target that week, along with pretty much everything else students would need (like tbruhn442 said above). Also, during new student week there is Midnight Madness. I THINK they take you to Target for that, not 100% sure. Maybe someone else knows. But for Midnight Madness they provide buses to take students shopping between 10PM - 2AM.

In the past Midnight Madness took students to Walmart. It’s not accessible via a campus bus. Target is inside College Mall. College Mall is accessible via an IU bus. BTW–WalMart can be reached on Bloomington Transit. IU students ride BT for free with their student IDs.

Based on my years of living in Bloomington, you don’t need to worry about Target or Walmart running out of fridges, microwaves, etc. They already have them stacked to the ceiling in both stores (and have for a couple of weeks) I was there last night and could barely get through portions of the store with all of the college gear stocked up. We locals try to stay away from Target and WalMart the week freshman move in. It’s mayhem, but both stores are ready for the return of students.

Also just a hint for those ordering things from Bed, Bath and Beyond and picking up in Bloomington: try to arrange to pick it up at the west side store (280 N. Gates) and not the College Mall Rd store IF you have transportation. It will not be as busy. If you need to use the bus, pick up at the College Mall Rd store.

yankees–you may want to rethink a purchase of a fridge for a couple of reasons. You live OOS. Where will you store it during the summer? I assume you don’t want to ship it home. Second, many students move off campus sophomore year and have no need for a mini-fridge.

Thanks for all the information. rrah initially I was going to going to rent but my roommate already had a microwave he wants to bring. It actually will be cheaper to buy one and at the end of the year I will either try to store or sell it.

You can always order one from amazon or Walmart.com and have it shipped directly to the dorm.

Do most students get a fridge or a freezer/fridge combination?

I have three kids in college and we purchased fridge/freezers for all. They like those for various reasons. My boys like having access to ice cubes in the room. My daughter usually buys a few lean cuisine type meals and likes having the freezer for those.

And to add another thought on potentially using a dorm fridge when living off campus in future, my son is a sophomore at IU this year. He had the fridge in Teter last year and is now in a five bedroom townhouse off campus. He moved in last week and took his dorm fridge to use in his room downstairs. It gives him that private space to put things he buys for himself.

tbruhn442 thank you…did your son enjoy living in Teter? was there enough room for him and his roommate to store stuff?

He did enjoy it. He was on an Honors floor in Boisen Hall. He liked that it was mostly quiet during week, and central to all the academic buildings. During the weekends he wasn’t there much since he was part of the Marching Hundred and an independent drumline. He spent a lot of time away from the room. But he said they have their fair share of socializing.

They had plenty of room. Their beds were bunked, and they had storage under the bottom bed for the flat rubbermaid type cases. The built-in closets offer quite a bit of storage with shelves, hanging rods and cabinets above. His roommate actually turned his desk 90 degrees so the back faced the beds. It gave him privacy at the desk and they used the top shelf for a TV that faced the beds. It worked out great. They had a fridge with microwave on top and a book case next to it. They never complained about the lack of space. They each had guitars and other toys too.

I am also living in the Honors floor in Boisen Hall. I am glad to hear that people socialize because I am a very social person and enjoy doing a lot of different things. Coming from San Diego I dont know a single person on campus so I am excited about meeting new people. Also glad to hear about storage because I am sure I am going to need a lot of warm clothes because I consider 65 degrees cold

DD and DS lived on honors floors in Boisen. Both made great friends and were never at a loss for something to do, but they did appreciate it was quieter during the week and not crazy on weekends.

tbruhn–for a brief second I thought your son was my son’s roommate. :)

yankee–just participate in lots of the floor and other activities during Welcome Week. You’ll be fine.

son got the message from his roommate that he will bring a fridge, should we buy one for son ? I do not know if there is enough space for two fridges, of course, $100 is not a question to be considered.

I doubt your son and his roommate will have space or need for two refrigerators. Since his roommate is bringing the fridge, maybe your son can bring the microwave. I think people usually stack the microwave on top of the fridge so it doesn’t take up much extra space.

thanks a lot, great idea.
